Pakistan won’t bow down to any pressure against IP gas pipeline

Isloo-Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Ghulam Sarwar Khan has called for greater cooperation between Pakistan and Iran in areas of energy and petroleum.

He was talking to Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Honardoost, who called on him in Islamabad on Wednesday.

He said Pakistan is fully committed to implementing Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project without any foreign pressure. He said IP gas project is the top priority for Pakistan more than any other gas pipeline project, unfortunately, the project was delayed in past due to international sanctions, he added.

The ambassador drew the attention of the minister on the exploration of possibilities in energy sector cooperation especially IP gas pipeline. He said IP gas pipeline will be a game changer for the region as other countries are willing to cooperate in the construction of this gas pipeline.

The ambassador also offered cooperation in government to government deal in the area of import of petroleum products to curb the smuggling.

The minister acknowledged the cooperation offered by Iran in areas of electricity supply to coastal areas.

They also agreed to enhance bilateral trades between the two countries.

We had golden opportunity to take action when the sanctions over Iran were lifted but we did not pay heed to it... Now it will be very risky to go ahead once again and our politicians have been reluctant due to already fragile and limping economy

IP pipeline will not be built at least for the next few years as PTI want's companies to invest more in local exploration and Iran is under sanctions. US this time is not giving waivers to any country for Iran trade and we are not in a position to challenge those sanctions. Most of our textile exports go to US and we cant put that in jeopardy for Iran.

I hope so, mate. Pakistan will be face crippling shortage of energy down the road. It needs access to cheap gas badly. I can't believe countries like France that are 2,000 miles from Russian gas fields are getting theit gas from that country but Pakistan is sat right next door to some of the largest gas reserves in the world in Iran yet is suffering energy deficits.

I may be wrong....But based on earlier thread in PDF, another reason for lack of progress is due to disagreement over pricing between Iran and Pakistan...So did Pakistan sort out pricing issue with Iran now???

Leveraging China to build the Pipeline, and piping it up to China with some of it going to Pakistan to pay the transit fees. NO money spent, Iran Supplies Oil/Gas, Pakistan paid in Oil/Gas for the transit, and China sells its products to Iran in exchange for the Oil and Gas.

With a pipeline to China, Pakistan and China can leverage the buying power to get a good price from Iran if Oil/Gas is to be paid in cash.

Pakistan and China should also ask Iran for Transit rights to ship via Rail to Turkey and onward to Europe. China can lay down a standard gauge railroad between The Iranian border and industrial parks in Gwadar. This can be extended to Karachi and Get the factories to ship products fast to Europe through Iran and Turkey.

Turkey and eastern European countries with BRI infrastructure maybe open to this to earn transit fees and pay off their loans.

Gwadar can also be set up to receive raw materials or basic products from Chinese companies in Africa and process them further and put them on rail to Europe. In the future, Afghan minerals can be processed in Afghanistan, and value added processed in Gwadar and shipped to Europe.
