KARACHI: Former Test opener Aamir Sohail has blamed ex-captain and fast bowling icon Wasim Akram for Pakistan not winning any World Cup after 1992.

Aamir said Wasim was made the captain of the national side in the last-minute till the 2003 World Cup and he feels that is a big reason for their failure to win a World Cup after 1992.

“It’s very simple. Put the 1992 World Cup to one side and talk about the 1996 World Cup. In 1995, Ramiz Raja was captain. Saleem Malik was the captain before that, he was very successful and if he could have spent one more year as captain then Wasim would not have been leading the side,” left-handed Aamir remarked.

“If you look at what happened till 2003, there was this persistence before every World Cup to remove the captain and put Wasim Akram in that role,” he claimed.

The 53-year-old Aamir also said that Wasim’s biggest contribution was to make sure Pakistan didn’t win a World Cup after 1992.

“Look, the biggest contribution by Wasim Akram for Pakistan cricket was making sure Pakistan does not win a World Cup after 92. Imran Khan should be very grateful to him, and he is, by awarding him the presidential award. If he [Wasim] was sincere with Pakistan, we would have easily won the 1996, 1999 and 2003 World Cups,” claimed Aamir.

Aamir who was a part of the 1992 World Cup-winning side, also said that this matter should be investigated.

“All of this drama happened for a reason. This should be investigated. The culprit behind all this should be brought to the forefront,” Aamir, who played his last World Cup in 1996, concluded.

.
It is Pakistani way of shuffle before key Cups , suspend players or not select players for mediocre reasons

Only time there was a stable environment was during Imran Khan's era and Javed Miandad as vice captain Imran controlled his players and who was selected and played for his squad as Captain , he did not took the selection committee's none sense

The teams under Imran Khan were fairly stable , same group of players playing regularly and playing long test series to polish their skills 5 Test Series and then 3-5 ODI this was a basic format and we also used to play alot of Tri Series , with West Indies / Australia or other nations

Pakistan 'could' have won but couldn't. Out of the 3, they should definitely have won the 2003 game. In fact, at the end of first innings, Pakistan had around 65%-70% probability of winning the game. Chasing 274 in a World Cup game against Pakistan, India definitely were under pressure. But Pakistan was wayward in the initial overs where they were spanked all around the ground by Tendulkar and Sehwag as India raced to 50 in less than 6 overs. After Sehwag and Ganguly fell in quick succession, Tendulkar continued the charge with Kaif playing the anchor role. Once both of them fell, Dravid and Yuvraj just guided the game for us on a good batting wicket. If Pakistan had got Tendulkar before India reached the 100 run mark, Pakistan would have gone on to win the game.

The next close contest was the 1996 game where it was India who batted first and Sidhu unfortunately got out on 91 to lay a decent platform for India. All the Indian batters chipped along nicely with the usual 20s-30s before Jadeja's 45(25) late charge galvanized India to 287. In response, Pakistan started off nicely by scoring 80 off the first 10 overs but then S Anwar got out for 48(32). Sohail continued the aggression but got out in the 15th over and Pakistan lost the game there itself. Prasad and Kumble who took 3 wickets each were the pick of the Indian bowlers. I still feel that Jadeja's innings is very underrated.

In 1999, Pakistan were never in the game although they had a good chance at the halfway mark by restricting India to 227 but Pakistani batters never got going.

Oops, I thought he was referring to the India-Pakistan games and not the WC as a whole.

Probably he is out of job and wants to be noticed like Salim Malik. Pakistan cricket team is plagued by back biting and too much politics. Never function as a unit and when ever team plays, players play for themselves. In 1992 they had a leader from which they were fearful of losing their places and IK polish them and that's why team did wonders. One must remind this gentleman why we lost in India while he was doing well at the crease in the semi final when he start thinking too big for himself and belittling Indian bowlers. He said to the Indian bowler go and fetch the ball from the boundary and in next ball Indian bowler fetched his wicket.
We have got plenty of talent where we lack is leaders and managers who are in control of the team and can handle players and at first sign of politics and discontent can say off you go mate door is that way regardless of the stature of the player. There are no I's in the team while their are 11 I's in the Pakistan cricket team that's a unique quality only we possess. Misbah and Younis Khan somehow manage to show some sign of gelling and team did performed well.
I do remember French football coach world cup held in France denied place to a very good player. Papers asked him the question and his explanation was he wants a player to play as a team not an actor play for himself and guess what French went on to win the cup.

With the talent they had on hand, Pakistan should've won 1996 and 1999 at least. But in both cases, they fell under pressure and/or conceit, and lost. That team was done and dusted in 2003, and Australia was on a surge. 2011 was a chance at an upset, but we fell short there too.

Are you talking about the India-Pakistan game or the WC as a whole?

Pak should of won the 2011 world cup, they couldn't chase 250 against
Indian bowling.

WC as a whole.
In 1996 Pakistan didn't really have a chance as they were defeated in the quarters. In 1999, yes it was a golden opportunity for Pakistan to get a 2nd WC but they were blanked by Australia in the final much like how India was blanked in 2003. The Aussie dominance started from the 1999 WC onwards as they went on to win 3 trophies on the trot.

No way anyone could have stopped Tendulkar that day. He was all fired up. The pre match was like Boxing stupid fightout. When Akhtar, Akram (or some other player) how Indians are not playing with us cos they are afraid in press conferences there was expectations of some sparks from pre Indian press conference. There was none. Sachin showed it during the match.

If not for the hamstring Sachin would have scored century in 50 balls and the match in 30 overs. And Sachin was batting with painkillers due to tennis elbow issue that time.

Lol. Sohail is a known rabble rouser. Someone send medium pacer Venkatesh Prasad to answer him.

If anyone states that any country except the Lankans even had a sniff of a chance in 1996 - they need their head examined.

.
Pakistan's best chance was in '99, Australia were iffy throughout the tourney, but brought their A game when it really mattered.

The ageing 2003 side was a caricature of their yesteryears.
