About 36,000 housemaids are ready in Dhaka to be sent to Saudi Arabia for works, said Bangladesh ambassador Golam Moshi.
‘We send around 4,000 maids a month to the Kingdom,’ he told Arabnews, pointing out that the total number of Bangladeshi maids in the Kingdom is 20,000 so far.
As per a recent agreement between Dhaka and Riyadh, more Bangladeshi housemaids will be going to the Kingdom.
The envoy said the agreed wages for the Bangladesh housemaids in the Kingdom is between SR800 and SR1,000.
However, he added that an average woman in Bangladesh earns around SR800 in the country, saying that an increase in wages in the Kingdom could attract more maids from Dhaka.
He also said the maids who come into the Kingdom for employment are given a comprehensive training at the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training in Dhaka.
‘They are taught spoken Arabic, Saudi culture, the Kingdom’s social environment and how to use the household appliances such as the vacuum cleaner, refrigerator, washing machine, microwave oven, the envoy said.
Officials in Dhaka told New Age that a Bangladesh delegation, led by expatriates welfare and overseas employment minister Nurul Islam, was visiting Saudi Arabia to request the Saudi government to recruit male workers along with housemaids.
During the bilateral talks, Dhaka would also request Riyadh to give special priorities to recruiting doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, skilled workers, technicians, construction and agriculture workers and other 12 categories of domestic service workers, specially the male DSWs.
There are 1.2 million Bangladeshi workers in the Kingdom.
