Pakistan warns India against unilateral plan to modify Indus Water Treaty

Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif warned India on Tuesday against devising a unilateral plan to modify the terms of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty between Islamabad and New Delhi.

“Pakistan is fulfilling its share of responsibility with respect to Indus Water Treaty,” Asif said while addressing a seminar on “Indus Water Treaty: Issues and Recommendations” organised by the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad.

“Any unilateral plan by India aimed at modifying the terms of the treaty will not be acceptable to Pakistan.”

The foreign minister went on to say that the government had already conveyed its reservations regarding the construction of hydro-electric and storage projects by India. “India has been displaying belligerence by designing water projects that violate the treaty,” Radio Pakistan quoted Asif as saying.

The minister urged the World Bank to play its due role in resolving the issue, claiming New Delhi was deliberately delaying the negotiations.

“Pakistan has always expressed its willingness to resolve all issues with India including the water distribution problem through dialogue,” he maintained.

The treaty between Pakistan and India was signed by President Ayub Khan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on September 19, 1960. Touted as a milestone in the history of international water diplomacy, the treaty is a 57-year-old accord between the two neighbours on how to share water from the rivers that flow through their territory.

Well US will do anything in favor of India right now. Question is are you willing to take chance to sabotage a treaty. With China on Pakistan side and can block your side of river. Repercussions to be studied before decision to be made. Don't be a fool in US backing as we have made the same mistake.

.
India is not changing anything with regards to IWT. Pakistan and and India follow WB and all issues can be resolved.

. .
Let's see.
Rather be in a conflict, we should strive for the betterment of our people. After all we have a very large number of poor people of the world population. Why be in West control and fight and not prosper. Look at them they all had clashes in the past. But now they have become developed nations and we are being controlled by them. Despite having bigger resources and manpower. Shame on us, both India and Pakistan

Let China do whatever they can. Given the fact that they are one of the top FDI investors of India, if China is ready to hurt Indo-China relationship and hurt the investments of their investor just for the sake of partially hurting us, let them do that, we will see how far they can and will go.

And you expect us to take advice from some foolish country who had already made mistakes ??? :p:

Who had unilaterally tried to change the status quo multiple times in the past, not only regarding IWT but other outstanding issues including Kashmir ??? India ???? Have you ever thought ???

Now when you failed to achieve your objectives gloriously each time, and when the situation doesn't seem to be in Pakistan's favor, why the sweet words about peace and betterment ??????? :(

India never used it's complete share of what was mentioned in the treaty. We are building projects only to utilize our share and that doesn't make us to violate any terms of the treaty

India is going to follow IWT by words written in the documents to utilize water as run of the flow. Even world bank cannot stop except for tech suggestions.

stupid yindoos...what does the WB have anything to do with your dirty moves? it has neither the authority nor the power to approve or disapprove your projects, whose fate ultimately depends on geopolitical calculations, cajoling and coercion. what the downstream countries need is not arbitration from the world bank or the west, which has no qualification or power to arbitrate, but closer coordination with upstreammost country in the region to spank the naughty yindoos in breaching international treaties and stealing water from those who need and deserve it.

if China doesn't go to war for their own sovereign territory (read dokalm), what chance do you think they'll go to war for you? You are overestimating your worth.

Surprising Pakistan could only find this village idiot as a foreign minister
