WASHINGTON: A representative of the US State Department assured Pakistanis attending a two-day convention at the Pakistan embassy last week that Pakistan and the United States, who have been partners for over 70 years, would continue their partnership.

Martha Patterson said that building on and improving this historical long-standing partnership was critical to both nations. She also mentioned that trade between the two countries reached $6.4 billion in 2017, an all-time high.

Officials from the US State Department and USAID also made a presentation on the ongoing cooperation in various areas between Pakistan and the US.

Responding to Ms Patterson’s remarks, Ambassador Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry acknowledged the US had made historic contribution towards the economic and social development of Pakistan and Islamabad was willing to cooperate with Washington to continue this relationship.

The convention, however, focused on the role that the Pakistani-American community could play in cementing this old relationship that was going through a bad patch.

Welcoming the participants, Ambassador Chaudhry said the Pakistani-American community was already playing a key role in bringing the two countries together by forging strong people-to-people relations. He hoped that young Pakistani-Americans would continue to enrich various facets of American society and life by excelling in their chosen fields of endeavour.

He said that an engaged and civic-minded expatriate community was key to enhancing mutual goodwill and understanding between Pakistan and the US.

The first-day of the convention was divided into panel discussions and presentations, which were punctuated by cultural and musical performances that showcased the diversity of Pakistan’s rich heritage.

The six panel discussions were focused on youth engagement; role of women; voice in academia and think-tanks; civic engagement; harmony through art and literature; and entrepreneurs. Each panel comprised Pakistani-Americans who had distinguished themselves in the subject area.

Summing up the day’s formal proceedings, Ambassador Chaudhry said that an outcome document, to be issued after the event, will enumerate the key ideas discussed during the convention. He stressed that the embassy would continue to provide a platform for Pakistani-Americans to network and interact for articulation and attainment of common objectives.

Pakistan’s Consuls General in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston also participated in an interactive session on the provision of consular services to the Pakistani-American communities in their areas of jurisdiction.

No need to make a superpower your enemy. If they want to be fooled then that's their choice but stop making a fool out of yourself. No more f16 diplomacy.

They are already the enemy. There is no point burring your head in the sand pretending there is nothing. The sooner we realize, the better we will be able to protect ourselves and our interests.

They will keep sending positive and negative signals. Right now they have also reinstated Pakistan's GSP status which is a good news.
However these little overtures and should not fool us

We can have a working relationship. If USA shows a positive attitude, we should reciprocate positively but at the same time be very cautious and do analysis what we are being asked in return..and weigh the options. But at strategic level we should have a realisation that we are not friends any more and it is not going to change any time soon so we prepare accordingly. Thus we shouldn't buy any weapons from USA or enter any defence deal or agreement. Rather we should invest in our SatNav and ICBMs and SLBMs either overtly or covertly.

Since Trump took over the US administration has hardly shown a positive attitude. They withheld funds, called us liars, now they have succeeded in putting us on the grey list of FATF. Cobra's are not coming either it seems. On the other hand India is being provided with high tech weapons system that is going to alter the balance of power, just yesterday Afghanistan backed terrorists hit us on the border while US and NATO chose to look the other way.
We cannot deny the inevitable. Its happening whether we like it or not. Pakistani elites just do not want to accept.

Equal partnership with both parties respecting each other is much needed.. its a good thing if our relations becomes better with USA .. even china wanted Pakistan to restore relations with USA and have good relations with them.. so its better for Pakistan to have good relation on equality basis...
Its our own fault, we couldn't see indian lobby using trying hard to make US PAK relations bad and still trying hard to make US stop military equipment sale.. our embassy and lobby if there is any were sleeping and allowed indians to get their demands to blame Pakistan for everything and make it hard for Pakistan to maintain any relations with USA...

That's true to large extent. The sooner we realise the better it is. Pakistanis are even so sissies that they are afraid of naming CIA while I know that RAW and NDS cannot do a jack squat without explicit blessings of CIA. Pishteen drama is being controlled by the same forces that support proxies in Iraq and Syria. But our leadership lacks self respect. When we need to give a tough message, we act all like a love dove.
