Pakistan, U.S. appear once again to be cooperating on drone strikes
BY TOM HUSSAIN

ISLAMABAD — A series of CIA drone strikes launched last week against Taliban insurgents in Pakistan’s northwest tribal areas provide the clearest demonstration yet that the U.S. intelligence agency and Pakistani security forces are once again cooperating on defeating the insurgents.

The drone strikes – nine in all, launched daily with a day off on Friday – targeted Taliban fighters as they retreated from the country’s advancing military, which has launched an offensive in the North Waziristan tribal area. Pakistani authorities have billed the campaign as the decisive battle of a seven-year war against Pakistan Taliban insurgents.
...
“Relative silence can be interpreted as, at the very least, tacit acceptance and, possibly, active cooperation between the countries. From the general location of the strikes . . . it would appear active cooperation is taking place – for surely neither the U.S. nor Pakistan could want an errant U.S.-fired missile hitting a Pakistani military target,” Dawn said in an editorial.
...
Each of the nine drone strikes launched between Oct. 5 and Saturday targeted militants fighting the Pakistani military, rather than anybody the U.S. would consider a high-value terrorist target. And the drones operated in airspace in frequent use by Pakistani warplanes and helicopter gunships.

None of the four drone strikes launched against militants in the Dattakhel area of North Waziristan, for example, targeted the dominant local faction, which is led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a key Haqqani network ally and, presumably, someone the United States would want to eliminate.

All "innocent civilians" should have already evacuated the region - anyone left now is largely fair game, especially if intel picks them up in areas considered to be hotbeds of terrorist activity.

More drone more terrorists!!
Only if innocent civilians are being targeted, accidentally or deliberately ... and given that the overwhelming majority of the population of NW has been evacuated, I doubt there are very many "innocent civilians" around to be killed.

@AgNoStiC MuSliM - Hasn't ambiguity served us well so far? - What is the need for being so open about this?
With the US limiting her presence in Afghanistan, and broad public support for military operations in FATA, I think the time is appropriate to start opening up about US-Pakistan cooperation against terrorism in Pakistan (where it exists), and provided Pakistan is convinced that the US is doing everything possible in her power to address Pakistan's concerns over terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan.

Given that the majority of the civilian population of NW has been evacuated, building public support for US-Pakistan anti-terrorism cooperation (within the ambit of the Pakistani constitution) can be accomplished.

I dont understand wht is the use of US drones at all, when op is already being done by army and PAF? US drones will only achieve in limiting public support for zarb e azb..not the other way round... I think as long as op zarb e azb is being done by Pak forces only...it will hv maximum public support but US drones will only have negative impact on public. Pak doesnt even hav to be vocal abt support of US drones... Even this ambiguity regd Pak stance on drones, and tacit acceptance of drones will only lead to negatve perception in the public... It wil stregthen two ideas
1) whatever Pak is doing against terrorism is on the behest of US
2) Pak forces are not capable enough to do operation on its own... And without US help.. Pak cant succeed in this opertion, and pak forces cant handle internal situation independently
Hence... It would hv been good if zarb e azb was solely a pak operation

Afghan militant killed in US drone attack

A hardcore Afghan militant was killed and his accomplice seriously injured when their compound in Speen Tal area of southern Hangu district was targeted by a US drone in early hours of Tuesday.

The eyewitnesses informed that around Sehri time, Afghan militant, identified as Abu Bakar, was hit by two missiles fired with help of drone. As a result, a large portion of the compound—situated just on the boundary between Hangu District and Aurakzai Agency—got demolished.

Due to the hovering of US drone in the air for some time, rescue activities couldn’t start straight away. However, later, the local people found a dead body and recovered one injured. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, whereas the killed militant was identified as Abu Bakar. A resident of Dewal village said three more people were injured in the strike, including a boy.

Abu Bakar was associated with the Haqqani Network and he belonged to Khost province of Afghanistan, bordering with North Waziristan and Kurram Agency of the tribal belt. Haqqani Network is known for having a strong presence in Khost province on the basis of its founder Maulvi Jalal-ud-Din Haqqani’s origin from this part of Afghanistan.

In a period of around four years, it is the second US drone attack in the jurisdiction of Hangu district. On November 21, 2013, Madrasa Miftah Ul Uloom in village Tandoor in Tal area was targeted by a US drone. At least eight militants associated with Haqqani Network were killed in the first ever US drone attack. All the slain militants were staying as a guest in the targeted Madrasa.

It is important to mention here that Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had formally charged the US government in an FIR for the first ever drone attack.

Pakistan considers US drone attack contrary to its sovereignty and autonomy, whereas the US authorities consider drone technology most effective in the ongoing war on terror.

The drone strike comes after a May 31 truck bombing in Kabul that killed more than 150 people in the deadliest attack in the Afghan capital since the ouster of the Taliban following the US-led invasion in 2001.

Afghan officials blamed the Pakistan-based Haqqani network for the blast.

However, Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Afghan Taliban’s second-in-command and head of the Haqqani network, denied any involvement in an audio message distributed to the media late on June 11.
