he 2,000 strong new recruits will perform security duties at churches, temples, and places of worship of other religious minorities in Sindh province

By Aamir Latif

KARACHI, Pakistan

A provincial government in southern Pakistan has announced it will hire around 2,000 people from the minority Hindu and Christian communities in its police force to protect their temples and churches.

According to Sindh province’s State Minister for Minorities Gayan Chund Israni, the decision was taken in the aftermath of an increase in terrorist attacks on the Christian community in Pakistan and reports of more such attacks on places of worship belonging to minorities.

“The newly-hired officers will be bound to perform security duties at churches, temples and places of worship of other religious minorities for at least the next five years,” Israni said in a statement Wednesday.

If the government plan is implemented, it will be the biggest hiring of such kind for the minorities in the Pakistani security force ever.

Last week, 17 people, including 10 Christians were killed in two suicide blasts outside two churches in Lahore, the country’s second largest city, which sparked countrywide protests and violence. Over 80 Christians were killed in a suicide blast at a church in northwestern Peshawar city in September 2013.

A Christian couple was publicly lynched in Lahore in November 2014 for alleged desecration of the Quran.

Christians and Hindus are two main minorities in Muslim-majority Pakistan who make up to three and two percent respectively.

Yes there's some reflection of divide. State'd protect everyone irrespective of religious beliefs and hire them the same way.

This is purely idiotic. Security officials should be recruited based on qualification and not religion.

Can't word it better myself, the whole idea is counter-productive, if the state is just going to sublet security of these places of worship to their own community then why not give them a separate state each so that they can run all their to their liking and comfort. Improving the employment prospects of minorities in state institution is the absolute need of the hour, however using them to *SPECIFICALLY* go and guard their own community is a fool's errand. If a police officer has failed to provide adequate protection to his place of duty or failed to discharge his duty with due diligence, he should be made to answer for it, this move will further fracture an already fragile society. What's next? Shia Policemen? Mohajir Policemen? Bohra Policemen? Memon Policemen? Illegal Afghan Immigrant Policeman? Burmese Rohingya Political Asylum Seeker Policemen? Where will we put a stop to it? All of these communities can argue that they are vulnerable and thus require police protection provided to them by members of their own community.

Does this imply non Hindu / Christian Policemen are incapable or un willing to protect temples & Churches ?

Good thing to integrate minorities but if this is the intent then its totally wrong.

Next you might see an SHO saying " I cannot protect the temple because sufficient Hindu policemen were not available" !!

Well members of their own community will know their religious sensitivities and act accordingly in those situations

Counterproductive in the extreme.

The uniformed services ( should) know no religion .

Performance of their task has no need to know religious sensitivities.

Means before non Muslims were not allowed in security forces?

Security Forces do not recruit on the basis of religion, there are already well-represented minorities in a number of security forces.

The Air Force and increasingly the Army has a size-able Christian officer class.
The Ahmedis are extremely well-represented in the Army.
Hindus are increasingly becoming a part of the medical corp in the Armed Forces.
