Even though ‘Raison d’etre’ of Marine Force is countries like USA is ‘Force projection’ across the world; it does not have to be so in Pakistan scenario. Defence against Air attacks as well a possible amphibious invasion to our 3 ports; Karachi, Port Qasim & Gwadar is vital.
I was aware that PN had Marine Force of about battalion strength established way back in the early 1970’s. I came across an old squash partner in Karachi a couple of years back who retired as Commodore. Apparently Pak Navy Marines have been revived and are in existence. This being essentially Naval Infantry with the Air Defence of PN installations as one of their main tasks.
Don't think it is a brand new force but expansion of existing marine force to the Division level strength. IMHO, this is a welcome move and should have done even earlier. Especially since Gwadar could also be vulnerable to attacks from the BLA.
