Pakistan Super League (PSL) Third Edition-News, Updates and Discussions

Haa bhai... Lahore walo... Kesa dia?

On serious note, feeling really sad for LQ. Don't know where it is wrong like may be the coach, selection or annexation with Geo but continuous bad performance warrants strict evaluation. Few players like Akaml etc have to be sent home for good.

With three consecutive victories, are Karachi Kings on their way to bringing home the trophy?

The great performance of the Kings thus far has left fans hopeful for this season to be the one where they take the cup home. PHOTO: PSL

The Karachi Kings started the 2018 season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) confidently, by winning their first three matches in a row. This is a historic moment for the Kings in the tournament, especially as they were able to beat the mighty Quetta Gladiators, something they have failed to do in the previous two seasons of the PSL.

For the third season, the Kings made a few strategic changes in their squad. They appointed Imad Wasim as a skipper, and were also able to rope in the legendary all-rounder, Shahid Afridi, for their squad. Before this season, Afridi was part of Peshawar Zalmi and was instrumental in their success. Now, his impact and influence is visible in the initial victories of the Kings.

In the second match of the tournament against the Gladiators, Afridi caught a breathtaking running catch, which resulted in the dismissal of a well set Umar Amin. Credit should be given where it is due, as his catch effort was pivotal in the Kings’ victory over the pre-tournament favourites and two-time PSL finalists, the Quetta Gladiators.

There is a sense of pride that the people of Karachi associate with their team. Their love for the Kings was evident from their celebration in various localities of the city recently, after the team defeated the Peshawar Zalmi. People were joyous and distributed sweets and cakes to celebrate the massive victory against the reigning champions. This year’s PSL is still in its early days, which is why the Kings need to maintain their intensity and continue to press the paddle. After all, would it not be exhilarating for them to play the final in front of their own crowd at the National Stadium?

PSL is also a good platform for Wasim to learn the traits of captaincy, and his performance just might help him regain his lost spot in the national team. Even though he made a few mistakes in the first couple of matches – the most glaring one being his decision to bowl the first over of the innings against Zalmi in front of Kamran Akmal, who took the full toll of his over – he still has ample opportunities to get back on track.

Fortunately, in the match against Zalmi, Mohammad Amir and other talented bowlers in the squad were able to save the day, and restricted Zalmi to a modest total. The boys managed to successfully chase the score, and registered their second victory in a row in the tournament.

Karachi Kings’ strategy of playing Khurram Manzoor as an opener is debatable, as he proved to be a liability in the first two matches. Even when talking about statistics, Manzoor’s strike rate in the T20s is barely reaching 80s, despite the fact that players prefer to have a strike rate of over a 100 in this particular format. Going forward into the tournament, the Kings need to replace Manzoor with a better player, and might be better served if they use the skills of Babar Azam and Joe Denly as openers instead. As the saying goes, “better late than never”, which is exactly the approach the Kings should take. England’s skipper Eoin Morgan will be joining the team in the later stages of the tournament, and his experience will prove to be immensely helpful for the squad.

From the early days of domestic cricket, Karachi and Lahore have been regarded as the breeding ground for the future of Pakistani cricket, and have managed to raise some of the best domestic talent. However, thus far in the PSL, both the Karachi and Lahore teams have underperformed and disappointed their fans. Though the third season has surprised audiences with some great performances by the Kings, the Lahore Qalandars are once again disappointing fans by consistently staying at the bottom of the ranking.

When the time finally came for a showdown between Karachi and Lahore, third time proved to be a charm for the Kings, who defeated the Qalandars by 27 runs. Though the latter controlled the match during both innings, they failed to maintain the pressure on their opponents at crucial junctures. The Kings were reeling at 128/7 after 18 overs, but due to poor planning and slackness on part of the Qalandars, they were able to score 31 runs in the last two overs.

I am at a loss of words to see an inexperienced Shaheen Afridi being given the chance to bowl the last over of the innings. He proved earlier in the match that he was expensive for the Qalandars, as he kept giving away runs, yet he was brought back. Even in his final over, he conceded 18 runs and damaged the chances of winning the match. I cannot fathom the decision process behind using Shaheen at such a sensitive stage of the innings.

Sohail Khan and Shaheen conceded 84 runs in the seven overs they bowled against Karachi Kings. In my view, this decided the game and made defeat inevitable for the Qalandars. They struggled with the bat too, and slid from 70/1 in 6.3 overs to an all out at 132 in 18.3 overs. Talk about things escalating quickly, or in the case of the Qalandars, deescalating quickly. Even though a huge reason for the Kings’ win was a horrid performance on part of the Qalandars, their players also did not slip up and took every chance they got from the confused side and made the most of it. They finally settled the long on-going debate of biryani versus pulao, and as we all know, biryani emerged as the winner!

In their next match, the Kings will lock horns with the Multan Sultans, the new entrants and the dark horse of PSL 2018. The Sultans made a strong statement in their debut tournament and are sitting pretty close to the Kings, on the second position in the points table. It would be interesting to watch the Kings versus Sultans match, as three of the key players of the latter – Shoaib Malik, Kumar Sangakkara and Kieron Pollard – were part of the former’s squad in the previous season. Since these players have had “eyes on the inside”, they might use the knowledge of their opponents to their advantage.

Karachi Kings’ batting wobbled in the initial stages of the tournament, and they will need to work on it before they meet the Sultans. In my view, Sangakkara and Mohammad Irfan are the key players for Sultans, whereas a fit Amir is vital for the Kings’ cause. Whatever the result of the match may be, I am sure cricket fans inside the stadium and those watching on TV cannot wait for this exciting and high voltage event.

The great performance of the Kings thus far has left fans hopeful for this season to be the one where they take the cup home. While we eagerly anticipate the next match, let’s hope the team works on its weaknesses and maintains its position at the top of the board.

PSL 2018: What’s wrong with Lahore Qalandars?

Listen

l_286309_102257_updates.jpg

That’s the question almost everyone following the HBL Pakistan Super League is asking.Lahore’s performance in two-and-a-quarter editions of the PSL has been a source of heartbreak for their fans. They finished last in the first two editions and are moving in a similar direction this year as well.

It shouldn’t have been this way.

After all, they are one of the most expensive franchises, boasting the services of some of the T20 league’s biggest stars. They represent a city that is regarded as the epicentre of Pakistan cricket and always land in Dubai with perhaps the best pre-PSL hype.

But they have proved to be all talk.

Lahore crumbled in the inaugural edition in 2016 and flopped again last year. Despite taking a series of steps that included new replacements in the team and bringing in Aaqib Javed as head coach in place on Paddy Upton, the script hasn’t changed for the Qalandars in PSL 3, at least not yet.

On Monday night, they crashed to their third successive defeat in the contest, this time against arch rivals Karachi. They lost by 27 runs but there were so many situations where Lahore had the opportunity to end their winless run in the event.

The way they threw yet another match forced Aaqib Javed to take a swipe at his boys as he stressed that the Qalandars played “stupid cricket” in their game against Karachi Kings.

“With only 160 runs to chase, one can only lose the match with utmost effort or by playing very stupid cricket. Common sense is very important, no matter how good your game plan is, the individual presence of mind on the pitch makes the difference against opponents when it comes to execution. When singles, doubles are needed, you can’t go on trying to hit sixes,” the former Pakistan Test pacer commented after his team’s defeat.

Aaqib’s frustration is understandable.

After losing pinch-hitter Sunil Narine early, Lahore were put on track by an explosive partnership between skipper Brendon McCullum (44) and his vice captain Fakhar Zaman (19). They took Lahore to 70-1 in 6.3 overs.

“We had to play six in an over. Things can’t get easier than that,” Aaqib said. “Batsmen made choices which were not necessary. Game awareness was the factor we were lacking.”Once McCullum and Fakhar departed, the onus was on Umar Akmal, who is supposed to be the rock in Lahore’s middle-order. That rock crumbled like cookie, yet again.

“I will ask Umar Akmal what was his batting plan. I told him to go and stay there and take the game forward but on the crease, if you don’t go and play in that style then there is something wrong,” Aaqib said.

Perhaps Aaqib will have to do much more than just ask Umar, who was the highest run-getter of the inaugural PSL. The 27-year-old was fired by Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur for a reason. The guy doesn’t have the fitness needed to shine in international cricket. On top of that he also has an attitude problem. If Lahore will continue to rely on him then they will do so at their own peril.

So far Lahore have come across as a team waiting for their opponents to make mistakes. Aaqib admitted it ain’t a good strategy.“The winning team is one which determines the match on its own, controls and drives it in their favour. I don’t think that my team couldn’t have won all the three matches we lost.”

Instead of ruining lost opportunities, Aaqib and his team should focus more on the next seven PSL games. They will have to win most of those games to avoid the wooden spoon for the third year running.

Lahore will have to find some quick fixes because it could be game over for them if they are unable to end their losing spree in back-to-back matches against Islamabad United (March 2) and Peshawar Zalmi (March 3).

Lahore will have to get over the fact that they suffered a big blow even before the start of the contest when their Australian signing Chris Lynn, who was supposed to be one of the biggest stars of PSL this year, was ruled out of the league because of shoulder injury.

Well, Lynn is not coming and the Qalandars know it.

McCullum will have to lead from the front. His performance for Qalandars, who have so far won just five of the 19 PSL matches they have played since 2016, has been ordinary at best. His daredevil approach doesn’t inspire much trust either.

Lahore’s insistence on star power always leaves them low on work horses. And there are also other issues like a lack of balance. For instance they have two of the world’s best spinners — Yasir Shah and Sunil Narine — but their pace battery is below average. They suffered because of it in Dubai where the wickets had a greener tinge but hopefully for their fans things should be different in Sharjah. The low and slow wicket there could assist Lahore’s spin twins.

Lahore are in a jam and need to start giving their best. Otherwise, they will once again end the PSL season as its biggest losers.

Many foreign stars willing to play HBL-PSL games in Pakistan

Listen

l_286826_095113_updates.jpg

SHARJAH: The business end of HBL Pakistan Super League is still weeks away but people attached to it are already focused on it.

The reason: All franchises and their fans are keen that most of the teams’ foreign stars are available for the final three matches of the T20 league which are scheduled to be played in Pakistan.

The final of the last year’s edition was also played on Pakistani soil but unfortunately all the foreign stars of Quetta Gladiators including England superstar Kevin Pietersen stayed away from it. In stark contrast, most of the foreign recruits of Peshawar Zalmi flew to Lahore and played the finale at the Gaddafi Stadium. Unsurprisingly, they won the lop-sided title match quite comfortably.

All stakeholders are hoping to avoid a repeat of the 2017 scenario. In this year’s PSL, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has planned to have two eliminator games in Lahore and the final at the National Stadium in Karachi on March 25.When Karachi was announced as the venue for the final there were murmurs among the PSL’s foreign stars but in recent days there have been positive vibes from many of them.

On Wednesday, Multan Sultans – the latest addition to the PSL – confirmed that legendary Sri Lankan player Kumar Sangakkara was ready to travel to Pakistan with his team during the final week of PSL 3.

Multan Sultans President Asher Schon told reporters that apart from Sangakkara, several other players are also willing to play in Pakistan.“Kumar Sangakkara has agreed (to come to Pakistan) and he’s very excited about it as he has a lot of history in Pakistan,” Schon said.

Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi’ English signing Liam Dawson also announced that he was prepared to play in Pakistan.“If we (Peshawar Zalmi) get to eliminators then I will be prepared to go (Pakistan),” he was quoted as saying in an interview.

It is understood that many foreign players have also indicated to their franchise owners that they were willing to travel to Pakistan. They include JP Duminy, Darren Sammy, Shane Watson, Andre Fletcher, Carlos Brathwaite, Imran Tahir, Luke Ronchi, Colin Ingram, Colin Munro, Darren Bravo, Sam Billings, Tamim Iqbal and David Wiese.

However, according to latest reports, the third season of the PSL might be broadcast in India on DSport, which had recently also won a few other cricket rights in the country.

The third edition of the Pakistan Super League can be watched on TV in the UK with A Plus and UK 44 having won the broadcast rights of the tournament in the region. Prime TV channel is the official broadcaster of the PSL in the UK.

Apart from the television broadcast, PCB has also tied up with online websites to enable streaming of the matches. This will ensure greater viewership and in turn will attract bigger sponsors.

The third edition of the Pakistan Super League can be watched online at Cricketgateway, a website of the Global Sports Commerce and affiliate Technology Frontier Group, who have been awarded the sole licensing deal for showing it live.

The other way to watch the PSL 2018 is by downloading the Cricket Gateway Android App and Cricket Gateway iOS App. Fans from all over the world can watch the PSL online using this app, with the site having seen nearly 5 million hits last season from Australia, UK, USA, Singapore, UAE, Canada, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Germany, India and Japan apart from other parts of the world.

Although more is to be revealed later about the broadcasters of the PSL, PCB Executive Committee chief, Najam Sethi, says that PSL will make money out of broadcast rights, sponsorship rights, apparel rights, and ticket sales with the franchises getting a share out of this central pool.

This alone puts the broadcast rights in a very crucial position as it will bear an important mark on the financial viability and success of this T20 league and will also be a crucial indicator on how the PSL is received across the world vis-à-vis other similar domestic championships.
