Pakistan ship coming on goodwill visit today

Sunday, June 01, 2008 12:07:42 AM Oman Time

MUSCAT — The Pakistan navy ship Badr is paying a goodwill visit to the Sultanate from today. It was commissioned on March 1, 1994 in the Pakistan Navy. Badr is named after the famous battle of Badr fought by a small Muslim army led by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) against a three times bigger enemy.

The Prophet’s men were able to overpower numerically superior enemy through the firm belief and daring act. It is from this that ship’s motto ‘Dare, Believe and Win’ has been drawn.

PNS Badr is the third ship in Pakistan Navy, which takes this name. The first one was a World War II vintage battle class destroyer, which fought two wars and flew flags of several fleet commanders. The second ship taking this name was a US origin Brook Class destroyer acquired in 1988 and remained in service till 1993. Fitted with missiles, PNS Badr is capable of engaging targets at stand off ranges and thereby deters enemy forces from entering our waters. Ship’s gas turbine propulsion (COGOG) makes it a highly manoeuvreable platform that can attain top speed of 30 knots from rest in just 60 seconds.

PNS Badr is a frontline destroyer of the fleet at the moment with state-of-the-art equipment, weapons and sensors manned by highly worked up professional and motivated team.

Commanding Officer Captain Khalid Rashid PN joined Pakistan Navy in 1983 and was commissioned in operations branch in January 1988. He obtained his bridge watch keeping in 1990 from a Leander class ship PNS Shamsher and later served on various PN ships including Destroyer and Coastal Tanker as watch keeping officer.

He did his specialisation in communication in 1994 and did telecom training in France in 1996 while serving onboard PNS Babur. He is a graduate of PN War College and qualified in naval joint tactical and command course from China. Captain Khalid Rashid PN assumed command of PNS Badr on July 19, 2007.

Flight Commander Lieutenant Cdr Mohammed Tariq Qureshi PN earned his commission in June 1989 and joined naval aviation in February 1990. He qualified as helicopter instructor in 2001 and thereafter trained a number of student pilots including officers from allied countries. Presently, the officer is serving in 333 ASW squadron as instructor pilot.
