Balochistan will give 750 acres land in Pasni for shipyard’s construction

The Balochistan cabinet on Friday approved allotment of 750 acres of land to the Ministry of Defence Production for construction of a shipyard in Pasni city of Gwadar district.

The Balochistan government will allot the land to the ministry for construction of the shipyard on the of basis 30% equity. The provincial share will be 20-30% in the project.

“Around 10,000 jobs will be created in the shipyard, which would help in providing jobs to Balochistan’s youths,” Liaquat Ali Shahwani, spokesman for the Balochistan government, said.

The cabinet meeting, which continued for around eight hours, discussed about 50 agenda points. The cabinet reviewed the proposed amendment in the Local Government Act, 2010, and decided that the proposed amendment would be introduced after giving it final shape before holding of next local bodies election in Balochistan.

Shipbuilding industry to be explored under CPEC

China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a windfall opportunity for maritime sector, has also resulted in the growth prospects for shipbuilding industry in the country. But, the Karachi Shipyard with limited tonnage capacity is unable to compete with regional yards particularly in the Gulf which are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for all the four major areas of operation – shipbuilding, ship repair, oil rig construction and oil rig support. At present, bulk of the regional business is being captured by major yards in the Gulf like Dubai Dry Docks in the UAE, King Salman Global Maritime Industries Complex in Ras Al-Khair, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding (ADSB) in the UAE, Nakilat Damen Shipyards Qatar (NDSQ), Oman Dry-dock Company (ODC) at Duqm Port and Kakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd in Qatar and Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) in Bahrain.

The existing facilities at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) are not sufficient considering the PNSC’s fleet requirement, growing prospects of Pakistan’s economy, modern era for different category vessels, emerging requirement on the trade route and availability of more competitive services in the region. Deadweight tonnage of the biggest Aframax Tanker Quetta in current PNSC’s fleet is 107,215. Whereas, KS&EW has 2 Graving Docks with limited capacity (i.e. capacity of one dock is 18000 and other’s 26000 DWT) and 3 Shipbuilding Berths with miscellaneous capacity (i.e. capacity of one berth is 6000 DWT, second is of 15000 DWT and third is of 26000 DWT).

Pakistan Navy Dockyard is providing technical assistance, rebuild and repair of a wide range and diversity of equipment of PN Fleet and has undertaken fleet modernisation and up gradation programmes with success. PN Dockyard has developed the capability to undertake ambitious and indigenous construction projects like the production of Missiles Boats, Mines Counter Measure Vessel (MCMV) and AGOSTA 90-B Submarine. It was engaged in more than a billion dollar project of MODP for construction of Agosta 90-B submarines with the help of France. Submarine Construction in Pakistan Navy is a continuation of the naval construction efforts, which started in Pakistan Navy Dockyard in 1971 for self-reliance and indigenisation. It includes construction of floating docks, missile boats, X-Craft submarines and MCMVs. PN Dockyard had 30 years of repair & maintenance experience of DAPHNE and AGOSTA 70 submarines prior undertaking Meta construction project of AGOSTA-90B submarines in 1994.

Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Limited

Shipbuilding team comprises of Marine Engineers, Naval Architects, Production Engineers, Design and Project Management teams with extensive experience for construction of various types of ships. Since inception, KSEW have built over 444 vessels of different types and sizes. The Shipbuilding Division is well equipped to build ships up to 26,000 DWT including Frigates, Fast Attack Crafts, Logistic Support Ships, Bulk carriers, Oil Tankers, Seagoing and Harbour Tugs, Dredgers, Hopper Barges, Passenger Ferries, Fishing Trawlers, and special purpose crafts.

KS&EW carried out emergency repairs on a 250,000 TDW vessel at outer anchourage as the vessel, because of its size, could not enter Karachi Harbour. Similarly any alteration / conversion on hull / super structure can be undertaken. For Marine Boilers, Insulation, Lagging, Flooring & Brick Work can be carried out at the yard. Facilities also exist for repairs of Steam and Motor Vessels both Main and Auxiliary Machinery and all types of Marine and Stationary Boilers.

Pakistan and Turkey to Exchange Technology And Experience in Shipyard Operations.

Turkey is looking to assist Pakistan in shipyard operations by exchanging technology and experience. This was disclosed by a Turkish delegation led by Transport and Infrastructure Minister Cahit Turhan in a meeting with the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi.

Bridge Erection Boats

Pakistan Army through MVRDE has awarded contract for construction of 22x Boats Bridge Erection. These boats are made up of Aluminum Alloy, powered with Cummins Marine Diesel Engine of 205HP, which can push it at a speed of 13 Knots. This 5.85 meters long boat has robust design and strong enough to withstand fast river currents. The boat is capable to hold the bridge in the center line for erection against fast river currents, and is capable to push/pull upto 2 ton floating load.

KS & EW BUILDING INDIGENOUS PLATFORMS FOR PAKISTAN NAVY.



The contract signing ceremony of indigenously designed Gun Boat and Tugs was held at Ministry of Defence Production. The Managing Director Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW), Rear Admiral Ather Saleem and Director General Munitions Production, Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Qaiser Janjua signed the contracts. Maj General Akif Iqbal, Additional Secretary Defence Production and Rear Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) were also present at the occasion.

The Gun Boat possessing stealth features, armor protection and capable of achieving high speed will be indigenously designed by Pakistan Navy, while its construction will be undertaken by KS&EW. Additionally, 02 x Tugs equipped with state of the art machinery, adept to operate in rough weather and capable to conductsalvage operations will also be constructed.

Speaking at the occasion, MD KS&EW highlighted that projects are manifestation of indigenization and self-sufficiency in defence ship building. He also underlined that presentlyvarious vessels are under construction at KS&EW including MILGEM Corvette, Fast Attack Craft (Missile) and tugs for Pakistan Navy and Maritime Patrol Vessel for Pakistan Maritime Security Agency. Director General Munitions Production appreciated the management and workforce of KS&EW for ensuring successful and timely delivery of vessels in the past while ensuring highest quality international standards.

The ceremony was attended byvarious officials from Ministry of Defence Production and Pakistan Navy.
