Pakistan may be asked to join UN mission in Syria

Islamabad—As ground work is being prepared for a UN Observers’ Mission in Syria to monitor the implementation of cease-fire between government and rival groups there are indications that Pakistan may also be asked to contribute to the UN Observers’ Mission there.

Two U.N. Security Council resolutions were circulated on Friday in New York to authorize the deployment to Syria of up to 300 more ceasefire observers. Voting on both the resolutions — one drafted by Russia while the other drafted jointly by France and the U.S. –expected very soon. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov speaking in Moscow on Friday stressed “We should do everything we can to adopt, as soon as possible, a second resolution that will approve a full-scale observers mission.” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was quoted as saying that a new resolution was needed for a further “initial deployment” of up to 300 as recommended by Security Council.

Both the Russian and French-American drafts propose deployment of 300 unarmed observers for an initial 90-days period. The French-American draft stressed the importance that the Syrian government, as well as the Syrian opposition, should implement Annan’s six-point plan and abide by the ceasefire calls for the establishment within 90 days “of a U.N. Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) to monitor a cessation of armed violence in all its forms” on the basis of the Preliminary Understanding signed on April 19.

Should any of the Resolution is approved by UN Security Council, Pakistan, India and several other nations will be asked for contribution to the new UN Mission.” According to diplomatic sources Pakistan will consider sincerely if asked to contribute to the establishment of peace in brother country Syria.

We should not do that. Enough getting ourselves involved into Uncle Sam's dirty wars...or the UNs dirty wars or whatever lol. We got our own problems..

:coffee:

enough of freebees, for all we did for UN, we are still the worst people and terrorists according to west, so dump this whole UN all together

Pakistan provides 10% Manpower for all the deployment of United Nations Peacekeepers. It is an honour for Pakistan to be asked for such duties and these deployments provide an opportunity to our rank and file soldiers to be exposed to International environment.

.
I somewhat agree with the first two comments.

Though, think about it, we have the largest amount of UN soldiers around the world - so what's wrong with having a few more? We have a small global presence whether we recognize it or not.

.
No, we are currently in no stage to send more troops around the world. We need to bring the real Pakistan back.. We need to fix our issues at home.

.
Who dies first in UN deployments? Pakistani soldiers..
They are used as Human shields while other nationalities stay behind....

Somalia was a shining bloody example...

I agree with the consensus here, Pakistani UN Peacekeepers should not be deployed to Syria. That is one affair Pakistan should steer clear from. The solution to the conflict in Syria is political reconciliation among the disputing parties. All parties should show restraint and proceed with peaceful measures as soon as possible.

I think Pak troops should be sent there... it would not only give us more exposure to the international enviorment (as pointed out by Paksage) but help improve our image in the international community and maybe even help both Pak and syria to get closer politically...... by 2 cents.

These soldiers get paid 10 times what they are paid at home. I am sure if a soldier does not want to go, 100 others would apply to take his place. I find it interesting that all these Pakistanis who have moved to the West for Economic reasons begrudge poor Pakistani soldiers who wish to go on these assignments to make a little money for their families. It is not a coincidence that Pakistan, Bangladesh and India each contribute 10% of all the peacekeepers. This means their officers and soldiers get paid UN scale salaries as well as get International Exposure.

Is'nt it interesting that everyone who has opposed the Pakistani deployment is flying the flag of UK or USA. It is okay for them to be sitting in UK and USA, but they don't like Pakistan Army Jawans to make a little money for their families.

Hypocrisy ? You be the JUDGE.

It depends if the Syrian Government supports UN Peacekeeping troops on it's territory then having Pakistani UN Peacekeepers may be a viable option, but the problem often with UN Peacekeeping Missions are there isn't a clear objective, and often soldiers are sitting ducks and they are ordered to exercise extreme restraint often compromising their safety.

Perhaps, if soldiers are given adequate freedom of operations, and objectives are clear, and Syrian Government approved, then I do support the deployment. Perhaps, the Syrian Government will be more accepting of UN peacekeepers in troubled areas if Pakistani soldiers are there to man the area. Though, then again the Syrian Army nor Government may feel it is necessary to allow foreigner soldiers nor trust the UN.

"The world's best Army to rent"?

Why not? Making money is the name of the game, it seems. Let them do it as best as everyone else is!

There are other factors that need to be examined besides a soldier's personal pay scale under the UN Peacekeeping Mission.

Edit: I just remembered your also someone who supports Government overthrow of the Assad Government, so I think your motives are clear.

We should help the UN and our brothers and sisters in Syria and go there, but we should be armed to defend ourselves.
