Pakistan: Lawyer files petition in Supreme Court to stop Chinese from buying land

LAHORE: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has been petitioned by a senior lawyer to stop the Chinese from acquiring proprietary rights of land in the country on the plea that they require it for the multi-billion dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPECNSE 0.00 %).

According to The Nation, the petition was filed by the Barrister Zafarullah Khan of the Watan Party.

Khan claimed that Chinese citizens were being given out-of-turn benefits in the name of CPEC and "were acquiring land on lease which was against the sovereignty of the state."

The over USD 60 billion CPEC is a collection of infrastructure projects started in 2013.

Barrister Khan said the Chinese continue to enjoy many other privileges as recreational parks and residential colonies were being established for them in Pakistan.

He claimed that now Pakistcitizens were equating the CPEC to the East India Company that led to British occupation of the Indian subcontinent between the 18th and 20th centuries.

Khan said that the CPEC agreement between Pakistan and China is a one-sided contract favouring Beijing and severely compromising Islamabad's sovereignty.

He asked the apex court to issue immediate directives to the government to review the terms and conditions of the CPEC accord and to stop the Chinese from directly investing in Pakistan.

I agree, what if not all these who are buying are involved in CPEC? Another British India co. in the making! Looks like someone just sold of Pakistan for nickles and pennies while dropping us into debt so we cant even buy our way back!

.
Chinese can’t buy property even in their own country where property is leased for 75 years... yet here in Pakistan they are buying property ?

No foreigner should be allowed to buy property in Pakistan!

I support the Barrister !

.
This was job of brain dumb Nawaz Shareef and his majority party to bring this matter for legislation . But he was more busy getting CPEC loan and invest in Lahore.

What game is he playing?

I am confused:

ISLAMABAD: Barrister Zafarullah Khan of the Watan Party challenged the decision to form a single-member commission for Panama Papers – accusing Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family of owning offshore wealth – in the Supreme Court.

Zafarullah – who supports constitution of a parliamentary committee or panel to look into the Panama leaks scandal – submitted an application that stated that the court can’t constitute a commission since Enquiry Commission Bill 2016 is already waiting for the Parliament’s approval.

“The Parliament is the mother of all institutions and the courts are bound to implement the Parliament’s legislation. Supreme Court is not entitled to make Terms of References (ToRs) for the inquiry.” he said.

“The court’s jurisdiction does not allow it to hear any political family’s dispute,” the barrister said.

What family dispute? Using nation's wallet as personal wallet is not a family dispute!

. .
He is right but he should refrain from targeting friendly countries. It should be against all foreigners.

.
Indian source.

These Indians are hell jealous with cpec
Better ignore this news all together.
If there is even a little weight to this, I would not ignore it...I am sorry I dont want my next generation to live under colonial rule....And also it is noteworthy that neither NS nor Chinese actually announced what was allowed and how much was allowed under CPEC! Just that it is a loan...who was buying the land? That road/ corridor isnt being built on unoccupied land....and who was paying who how much for whose land?

You do know how big CPEC is...if this has even an ounce of truth coz honestly speaking I dont trust tinday brothers did us any favour and as all of their deals this prob will blow back 1 day!

@HRK The least the courts can do is dig into how transparent is this CPEC...better safe than sorry

.
This is a serious matter for us. We don't want Pakistan to have the property crisis places like London do where foreigners are buying land simply to hold it and wait for the value to go up.

Any foreign firm investing in Pakistan should have the right to lease land for factories or other business premises if they are investing x amount (not including the price of the property. The lease should be in the same length you can expect on the international market, and limited to the purpose of that specific business.

No land should be leased for the sole purpose of property development, commercial or residential.

Under no circumstances should any land ever be sold.

The leasing of land is completely normal business process, but we must be cautious that it doesn't lead to speculative development. There are loads of ghost cities in China made of similar developments.

.
Why just Chinese companies? Why not all multinational companies ?
