Mohmand Dam Project:

Mohmand Dam is a multi- purpose project.
Construction in progress on all 11 sites;
Project likely to be completed in 2026

January 25, 2023: Chairman WAPDA Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) was briefed during his visit to under-construction Mohmand Dam Project that the diversion system is scheduled for completion in November this year, while the project is likely to be completed in 2026.

On completion, it will store 1.2 MAF of water and help mitigate floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera. Besides supplementing 160,000 acres of existing land, it will also irrigate 18,237 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda.

The project will also provide 300 million gallons water per day to Peshawar for drinking purpose.

Estimated annual benefits of the Project stands at Rs. 51.6 billion. A sum of Rs. 4.5 billion has been earmarked for Confidence Building Measures (CBM) in the project area for socio-economic development of the locals.

Balochistan Public Health Engineering (PHE) has submitted a feasibility assessment for three major dams to alleviate Quetta’s acute water shortage.

These dams include the Babar Kach, Brij Aziz Khan, and Halak, for which the PHE agency has completed the feasibility report and PC 1 and begun construction.

Due to the fast depletion of subsurface water levels over the years, Balochistan’s provincial capital has been dealing with a severe water crisis.

To address this issue, the province has chosen to contact the federal government and demand that these dam projects be included in the federal Public Sector Development Program (PSDP).

The cost of the Babar Kach Dam is anticipated to be Rs. 73 billion, Burj Aziz Khan Dam will cost Rs. 48 billion, and the Halak Dam will cost Rs. 22 billion.

Stage-I is likely to be completed in mid 2024 to irrigate 16,380 acres of land in the far-flung and backward area. Besides, it will also generate 19 mega watt hydel electricity.

The project is of immense importance for poverty alleviation and social uplift in the area through irrigated agriculture.

WAPDA is constructing Nai Gaj Dam near Dadu in Sindh. Scheduled for completion by end 2024, this multi-purpose project will store 300,000 acre feet of water to irrigate 28,800 acres of land.

It will also have a small hydel power station to generate 4.2 MW green, clean electricity..

Nai Gaj Dam Project

The Chairman WAPDA visited Nai Gaj Dam to review construction activities on various sites of the project including main dam, main spillway, dykes and intake structure.

The PD Nai Gaj Aijaz Hussain Memon briefed the Chairman about the progress achieved so far. The Chairman directed the project management to devise and implement a contingency plan to minimize the delays caused by the last year’s flood and other contributing factors. Prior to the 2022-floods, the project was scheduled for completion in 2024.

Nai Gaj Dam is being constructed across River Gaj in District Dadu of Sindh.

It will store 300,000 acres feet of water to irrigate 28,800 acres of land, besides generating 4.2 MW of electricity.

Kachhi Canal extension project nears completion​

Will irrigate additional 30,000 acres of land

LAHORE: The Kachhi Canal Extension Project, currently being constructed by WAPDA in District Dera Bugti of Balochistan, is nearing completion and is expected to be finished in the next few months.

Upon completion, the project will provide irrigation to an additional 30,000 acres of land in the project area. As a result, the total command area of Kachhi Canal Phase-I will expand to 102,000 acres.

General Manager (Central) and Project Director of the Kachhi Canal Project, Syed Ali Akhtar Shah, along with consultants and contractors, updated the chairman on the progress of the construction work on the 40-kilometer main lined canal, as well as the associated structures and the 32-kilometer water distribution system, has been completed except for a few remaining sites, which are expected to be finished in the near future.

Subsequently, the WAPDA chairman conducted a comprehensive inspection of the main canal, allied structures, and the distribution system. During his address, he emphasised the significance of the project in uplifting impoverished and remote areas of Balochistan by promoting irrigated agriculture and fostering an agro-based economy in the province.

The chairman emphasised that the development of the command area is equally crucial to fully capitalise on the benefits of the Kachhi Canal Extension Project, and he expressed hope that the government of Balochistan would promptly undertake the necessary measures for its development.

The chairman was also briefed about the plan to restore the 363-kilometer main canal, which had been operational since 2017 but suffered damage in certain sections due to a devastating flood in August of the previous year.

In response, the chairman instructed the project management to diligently work towards reinstating water flow in the main canal within the shortest possible timeframe, once the required funds are made available.
