Pakistan, India sharing intelligence
* ISI official says India, Pakistan have exchanged a lot of information about Mumbai attack

LAHORE: In an unprecedented arrangement, Pakistan and India are now sharing intelligence on extremists.
US, which prodded the traditional rivals in this direction, hopes that the cooperation will get a boost from the re-election of a Congress-led alliance in India.
US officials told the Wall Street Journal, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had arranged for Pakistan and India to share information on Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, blamed for Novembers terrorist attack on Mumbai, as well as Taliban commanders leading the insurgency in Pakistan.
The US is stressing that the governments in Islamabad and New Delhi face a common threat. It hopes that India will ease its deployments against Pakistan when it sees Islamabad seriously fighting the militants in turn prompting Islamabad to focus more on the Tribal Areas battle.
We have to satisfy the Mumbai question, and show India that the threat is abating, a US South Asia-strategy official said.
Exchange: Intelligence sharing on Mumbai has led to a more frequent exchange of information, US and Pakistani officials said. An Inter-Services Intelligence official said India and Pakistan have exchanged a lot of information about the Mumbai attack. He said the CIA was initially used as a conduit but the two countries now work directly with each other.

The US has been concerned that the Lashkar could carry out another strike on India in a bid to stoke a war.
The CIA is stepping up efforts in the Tribal Areas, tracking the location of the cell phones of Taliban commanders as well as taking pictures and collecting information in their training camps. The US shares some of this information with Pakistan and India.

The Zardari government has been hoping that Congresss victory will lead to India moving one or two divisions away from the Pakistan border in the coming months. Indian officials say they are not ready to do so.
