New York:Pakistanhas leftIndiafar behind in terms of improving water and sanitation access for their citizens, reveals a new performance index released on Friday.

While Pakistan was ranked five in the new index developed by The Water Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill`s Gillings School of Global Public Health in the US, India occupied an unenviable 92nd position.

High-performing countries for 2015 are those that achieved significant improvement in recent years compared to their peers. Low-performing countries are those that showed stagnation or decline in recent years compared to their peers.

India`s ranking as a bottom-performer predates the recent launch of the "Clean India Mission" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sub-Saharan Africa countries including Mali, South Africa, and Ethiopia are also among the top performers world-wide in spite of modest resources, according to the WaSH Performance Index that evaluates country performance in improving access to water and sanitation and in eroding inequalities in access.

Other high performers include China, El Salvador, Niger, Egypt, and Maldives. Conversely, Russia, the Philippines and Brazil were bottom performers .

The index compares countries of all sizes and income levels. Using this method, the report revealed that a country`s gross domestic product did not determine performance in improving water and sanitation for its citizens.

"This means that even countries with limited resources can make great strides if they have the right programs in place," said co-author of the report Jamie Bartram, director of The Water Institute at UNC.

"National governments, NGOs, and aid agencies can direct their resources toward building systems and capacity for action in countries that are lagging, and toward implementation where those capacities are in place and performing," Bartram noted.

A strange trend has started recently in Pakistan which may have contributed in improved provision of better quality water. Should I share it with you guys?

Firstly I must acknowledge Pakistan is way behind from providing clean water to every citizen.

There is a kind of race that started about 5 years ago among politicians and corporate tycoons to provide clean water to improve their image. More and more, bigger and better water filtration plants are coming up just about everywhere with a huge board besides who granted it for free. It has become like a media campaign. Now water filtration plants are not really that expensive in Pakistan and it makes for huge publicity.

There are helping factors to that. Firstly population in Pakistan appreciates clean water for some reason. There maybe religious reasons to it but it is something they will be obliged by. Mushshraf started to import and then attracted quite a few water purification brands into establishing plants here in Pakistan. These plants are manufactured or atleast can be supported locally. There is fierce competition for market share means low prices.

Then canal system of Pakistan is one of a kind. Probably largest in the world. So fresh water is easy to get from a canal to a plant which themselves are cheaper. Next blessing came in the form of Power outages. Yes, I mean it. As people turned to alternate sources to power their houses. Markets were flooded with solar panels with ever dropping prices. With solar panels, politicians could now stick in a small water purification plant with solar panels on top in a far flung village with a huge board with his picture reminding constantly who to vote next election. Who cares? At least there is clean water. Looking at the popularity Punjab government and Balochistan government with help of NGOs started giving solar powered filtration plants free or at nominal rates through their MPs basically to boost their political image.

As I said, we are way far from ideal but people's desire for clean water and politician's / business tycoon's desire to gain popularity has really helped here.

Pretty lame excuse... This problem could have been solved a long time ago if it was a priority for people... but they care more for things like religion :hitwall:
So true

But the new GoI is going to change this deplorable situation, that much is clear.

China has more population then you but they are no way near to your magical number 92nd :-D :-D

China has pollution issues which India does not have, so I guess it evens out the field. And should you really be gloating, really? If we talk about medical profile of both countries you will be sulking for a week.

As elders say, to cure a problem first we have to acknowledge it and then give priority to it.

Current gov't has already done it and is only matter of years when India will be among top in most indicators.

China was where India is today a decade back. With proper policies and growing GDP there's no reason why it can't happen.
