A Pakistani senate defence production committee is looking to impose a ban on procuring from abroad defence equipment that can be manufactured within the country.

The Senate Standing Committee on Defence Production made the recommendation following a hearing on 10 September in a bid to support the development of a self-sustaining local defence industrial base.

The committee said the ban would force both the federal and provincial governments in Pakistan to buy locally manufactured equipment. Imports would only be permitted if the required defence articles were not locally available.

The committee heard that in some cases defence equipment that could have been sourced from local industry is imported because the procurement is linked to commissions.

no electricity not much in production these days....would have made sense was this thought in 1990s when we imported / allowed import of textile from other countries despite being an exporter of textile!

.
We make tanks but also import them
We make guns but also import them
We make fighter jet but also import other ones
We make bullet proof jackets but also import them
We make APCs too but also import them
Etc etc

The thing is, we make oranges but also import Apples.
In many cases, we make Apples but still import oranges.

Who will decide what to import & what not? Considering there are always kick bags to make in foreign deals. Take this progress as a grain of salt.

What about the units that have technologically advance internal electronics or command systems ? How is that gap would be bridged ?

Prior to the ban we must have a plan to bridge that gap to make sure local products can also provide same advancements seen

Example:
APC : Some of the international products have better usage of Armor / Electrical visual systems
Tanks : Have complex optical targeting system , automated firing systems etc , accuracies
Helicopters: Used at city level ambulance / police we don't make decent helicopter under licence
Trucks used for Missiles : Do we make these locally ? How would that be impacted

Defence Satellite: Same logic is the stuff being made , on par with international standard
##########################################################################
Ambulances: The quality of ambulances used the Suzuki pickup are not up to world standard
Firefighter Units: The international units are larger carry more material , larger ladders

Do we have Robotics usage in manufacturing of any military / civilian usage if not we must first implement Robotics to speed up production

Between 90's and Present there have been great enhancements in production lines outside of Pakistan , and technological advancement in electronics

Our facilities have not been upgraded accordingly also we need a dedicated
"Electronics branch of military that focuses on engineering Electronic systems for units"
Dedicated so it can import its own needed equipment separately

This is a good step provided the local industry also picks up the investment necessary to keep up with the global defence industry. The gov't and military leadership go out more and sign joint R&D pacts with firms in Turkey, South Africa, Brazil, Italy, etc, to really make this idea fly. If we can mimic the best qualities of Turkey's indigenization drive, that would be great, especially in achieving a remarkably efficient level of synergy between public and private enterprises. We also the private sector to step up, some incentives to get wealthy Pakistanis to enter this realm could be considered.

this should be done on priority. we are producing good quality materials than those we purchase from north east in half price.
