In the backdrop of Sri Lanka and Pakistan positioned to reach a $1 billion trade volume, Pakistani Commerce Minister is now scheduled to arrive in Colombo to take the process forward.

The first Business Interaction Forum between both countries is to be held next week in Colombo. "We believe that there is great unrealised trade potential that we could jointly explore" said Rishad Bathiudeen addressing top officials on Wednesday on the forthcoming visit of Pakistani Minister of Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan to Colombo.

Minister Khan's visit on 10-11 November, facilitated by Minister Bathiudeen's Department of Commerce, is expected drive current bilateral trade to new levels.

Minister Bathiudeen, said: "There has been continued trade growth between both countries-still, we believe that there is great unrealised trade potential that we could jointly explore. We are facilitating several high level courtesy calls for Minister Khurram. A highlight of this visit will be the first ever Business Interaction Forum to be held with the participation of business representatives of both sides."

In 2014, bilateral trade between both countries stood at $ 353 million. In January 2014, when the then Pakistan High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Major Genenral Qasim Qureshi called on Minister Bathiudeen at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, he stressed: "What we want to do is to expand bilateral trade from the present levels to $ one billion, in the coming years."

Commerce Minister leads a Trade Delegation to Sri Lanka

ISLAMABAD: Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan will be leading a trade delegation to Sri Lanka on November 10.

The Delegation is comprised delegates from Cement, Pharmaceutical, Engineering and Agro products, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) sources said.

According to TDAP sources, during the visit Commerce Minister will also meet with President and Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and will attend seminar on investment.

Pakistan Mission at Colombo has arranged Business to Business meetings for the delegates, the sources said.

It is pertinent to mention that TDAP is also organizing Single Country Exhibition at Sri Lanka from 15-17 January, 2016, wherein renowned companies from Textile, Agro, Engineering, Marble and Granite, Handicrafts, Garments & Accessories, Jewellery sector will participate in the event.

The TDAP sources further major components of Single Country Exhibition will be exhibition display, Business to business meeting, Pakistani cuisine festival and Cultural Performances.

The exhibition has been organized under the patronage and support of Government of Sri Lanka.

"It is expected that large number of people will visit the event", the TDAP said.

The TDAP also said that Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is operational from June 12, 2005.

Under the Free Trade Agreement, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have agreed to offer preferential market access to each other's' exports by way of granting tariff concessions.
