KARACHI: 30 inmates, both young and old, at Karachi central Jail are appearing in this year’s matriculation examination in hope that their respective prison terms would be reduced by 180 days (six months) on passing the exams.

Administration of Matric Board visited the examination centre at the central jail here on Tuesday. Out of total 30, 21 are appearing for the SSC Part-I and nine are taking Part-II exams. All except one student are appearing for art subjects.

Chief Invigilator Noman Ahsan and Chairman Matric Board Fasih-ud-Din frisked the inmates themselves on the occasion.

Ahsan said that the inmates have not been charged exam fees and would be rewarded with deduction of their jail term by 180 days on passing the exams.

He said that a teacher was provided to the inmates for the preparations of the exams. Examination papers from the previous five years were also provided to the prisoners, he added.

Great to see our government is finally getting brain. Is this happening all over pak or just khi?

Good to see that some brainy people sitting some where in the country.

Yes. Giving incentives and respect to educated people will encourage our parents to send their children to school/colleges. Reduction of punishments up till PhD different courses will help inmates become a good part of our society again.

.
That's actually a good idea. Maybe even take it a step further and offer career building classes that also reduce sentences if cleared. An educated man is less likely to be involved in criminal activity than one who's illiterate. Or how about specific short college courses?

The possibilities are endless, and would go a long way to reduce Pakistan's prison population, along with decreasing criminal activity.

very creative and good idea. Credit where it is due.

.
They should also offer Intermediate and BA degree programs and reduce jail time for a year. After getting university degree these criminals can run for elections and join their fellow criminals in the assemblies.

A criminal after release go back to his crime mostly bcz he has no other place in society. When he is literate, he can have better alternatives and more chances to join back society at peace.

Illiterate and criminal politicians buy fake degrees to get elected to Pakistan parliament. Every other week there is news of a member caught with fake degree.

I would prefer they spend their time in parliament rather than roaming the streets murdering.

Why end at matriculation? Offer them F.Sc too.

We have foreign funded terrorists blowing themselves up and killing tens of innocent people in Pakistan. These politician criminals are only interested in stealing as much money as they can and install their friends in important post to perpetuate corruption in Pakistan.
