Pakistan Can No Longer Ignore Its Weakened Economy

Exquisite.

I am, in agreement with the above, without any 'retort'.

Please consider a positive rating from my side, alas, I do not have the privilege to award one.

@MilSpec @nair I tag you to read the initial write up I replied to and this one. Truly worth 'munching' over.

Yes, a answer worthy of a Beauty pageant winner.

Only thing missing was "world peace".

We already have a constitution which will deliver, only if allowed to work.

This reply is for those who are know-nothing types and are current affairs defunct dudes. Mostly jealous Modi andh Bhakts who hate Pakistan.

For moron Indians who are out to ridicule Pakistanis on its economy woes here on the PDF.

By 1990, India had started having BOP problems.
By the end of 1990, it was in a serious economic crisis.

Has the Pakistan pawned or pledged its gold reserves yet, the way India did?
No.
Its not that easy for any nuclear power nation to go down and start begging.
IMF/WB/ADB know this that they (distressed nuke nations) would start selling their nukes to rogue nations for billions when the push came to shove.

Pakistan is not in dire straits or in a critical condition.
Pakistan is a weathercock.
Khali wali!

The problem is now how to make the Constitution work. The institutions are all dysfunctional, except one, that there is no option but to let the sole functioning institution handle all matters, no matter what the Constitution says. It is in the interest of the sole functioning institution not to let any serious challengers to its dominance become viable. A classic Catch-22 situation.

Elections happening on time is the best way to win back the space lost by civilians. It may take a generation, but it eventually works out. Look at Latin American countries. Look at South Korea, Indonesia, even Philippines.

We have a unique situation, but it only requires some tailoring. The template has been there for more than a couple of decades.

When the game is played by rules, everyone - even detractors, benefit.

The biggest benefit of continued cycle of elections would be a growing economy. Unstable countries do not receive investments, only stable ones do. Unstable countries do not grow their exports, only stable ones do. Unstable countries do not improve HDI, only stable ones do. Army interference only breeds instability.

I have two dictums:

1. Government has no business being in business.

2. Army has no business telling the government what & how it should do.

What happened in 2008? How do you think financing was secured?
:)

How about Army not being in business either?

pakistan has pawned its entire civil society, its constitution and its existence for 13 pieces of silver from the US and chinese.

This is pretty obvious for all those who are not blind. :disagree:

If the Army quits Business or Politics, then what on earth will it do ?

Its not like they are any good at waging wars and winning it. :cheesy: Last time they tried, they lost half their nation.

For a Country trying to portray itself as a potential leading Islamic leader AND a country that feels it should be treated by the global world as a near equal to India .......... ITS economy is utterly AWFUL

A country of over 200 million people can only muster EXPORTS OF bearly $25 billion per year.

There is no hint of a modern hi tech industry in any field be it Pharmaceuticals IT or Space.

Instead we get the same old 200 year old Textile trade which other countries produce far more efficiently

Pakistan lacks rich influential modern business leaders to even attempt to build a class industry

It looks like their ARMY and generals run everything and hinder investment

THEY are banking on CPEC and China for EVERYTHING
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
Look who is talking. Do you ever visited Pakistan?. And what hi tech industries you are talking about? India its self is services industries based country

What about mixing matters of state and matters of religion?

How about Army not being in business either?

Great question!

Well there is always room for improvement. Since when did an Israeli/Indian care so much for the Pakistani economy.

Can not get away from that yet. It would take a generation at least. Civilians can only fight on so many fronts.

I should clarify though, I am an Islamist at heart, but my Islamism is tempered, not brittle. I see the damage done when religion is used for making gains. We do need to do-emphasize religion in matters of State. Slowly, over time religion would get pushed aside. The process would be tolerable up to a point. I would not want us to be a secular state as it is understood in the West. I appreciate practical secularism of Mughals. There could be an analogue for Pakistan.

Whoah... are we discussing Economy or religion now? Must get back on track.

When do you see the government heading over to IMF/WB for a new bailout package and what terms might it have to acquiesce to to get it? Before or after elections, if and when they are held?

Golden words.

I do not know nearly enough. There are too many variables to think about & I can not motivate myself to find data.

It would be important to see who gets to set policy in the remaining months until election, since Ishaq Dar is out of the picture for now. Any answer would depend upon the policy changes that are hard to guess as of now.
