Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Regional Chairman and Vice-President Mian Rehman Aziz Chan on Friday said that the local furniture sector attached great importance to the national economy and could make a substantial contribution of billions of dollars export annually if the government properly patronized it on priority for boosting export of Pak-handmade furniture.

Talking to a delegation of Pakistan Furniture Council (PFC) headed by its Chief Executive Mian Kashif Ashfaq here, Mian Rehman Aziz Chan appreciated the PFC for holding successful series of Interiors Pakistan exhibitions in Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore.

He urged the government to establish greater liaison with this sector to fully understand the market conditions and requirements of the industry needs to protect, develop and promote. He said the government should also provide more visible support to furniture business in terms of simple and easily obtainable grants for exhibiting and travelling to trade shows and promoting Pak export as a success globally.

He suggested that a programme for developing and promoting the furniture sector both in rural and urban areas could be feasible, and also stressed upon urgent need for implementing modern techniques which not only enhance productivity, develop skills of labourers and meet requirements of local and global markets.

PFC Chief Executive Mian Kashif Ashfaq, on this occasion, apprising him of successful exhibitions of Interiors Pakistan said more than 100 leading companies and interior designers displayed their products in 6th mega exhibition held at Expo Centre here recently while as many as 250,000 people visited the exhibition.

i oppose it once they start getting dollars they will start cutting out remaining trees blindly day and nights . no need this money

No doubt a balanced approach is needed: you can increase furniture exports while maintaining an environmental balance. Governments can place quotas? Or some program for every tree cut down for furniture, two trees are planted.

That is why it is said that a business man can't think beyond his business and never loyal to his country or nation. Pakistan is among the countries with the lowest forest cover. I think there should be a total ban on cutting all the threes for a decade and emergency forestations campaigns should be started by the govt.

Furniture does not necessarily have to be made of wood.

Also I think we could just import from other countries since wood is probably one of the cheapest resources on the global market

Only 5% of land is covered by forest. Cutting trees will be a disaster.

Thanks for complementing my post. I was actually thinking about it. It can be metal, plastics, artificial fibres / wood and as you said it can be imported too. But let you know that Pakistan's traditional furniture will not find a huge demand in the west i.e. EU, USA etc but may be in the middle east. People in west mostly like Ikea style minimalistic and functional furniture while they will appreciate Pakistani furniture at exhibitions and shows but I'm afraid they won't like it in their homes until our carpenters and designers can adopt to the contemporary style and tread along the world..
I personally don't like overly eye taxing patterns and art work on the furniture in my home too.

It will make furniture more expensive in local market. The wood is already too expensive and scarce.

Here is a thing, a balanced approach is possible for every sale (Sale percentage) the manufacturer must spend that money to grow new trees. Many companies do this in west where for each sale they spend certain amount for this cause.

I think you know very little about our government . nawaz government let qatari prince hunt the endangered bird .

They cut trees here before they even fully grow,Rawalpindi can be so beautiful with full grown trees providing shade to both sides of roads. And to the people talking about BALANCE (like cutting one tree and planting two?),at the moment this nation's mentality is to kill the chicken that lays the golden eggs

A great idea , many nations do export Timber legally Canada etc

However untill we have thick forest in Baluchistan area by planning and development we can't chop more tree the damage is already tremendouswe might have like low 0.05% of land with trees vs how it was before

India has stolen all the areas with Forest

Than build steel furniture. That will take of your concern.
