Pakistan breaks record for highest number of cars sold in a month

.
By the way India is no better, we are still far away from markets like USA where air bags, ebd are mandatory. It is something like USA > India > Pakistan > Afghanistan :D. Even in India import duties for car is higher ie 100%. Guess who is vocal supporter of this duty regime now? The foreign companies themselves as they invested a money building plants they dont want competition from cheaper imports.

Suzuki uses India as an R&D base, and as an output centre for its new models, where it on average, introduces one or two models in the country every financial year. There has already been a shift in trend as far as safety features are concerned. All new VW, Ford, and Hyundai vehicles come fitted with airbags, across the board. ABS is now compulsory in all commercial vehicles etc. There's a lot happening, but a lot more needs to be done sooner rather than later.

The length and breadth are nearly maxed out in most areas, how much more can one expand roads.

South Asia, including Pakistan, needs better traffic management. I'm tired of this ridiculous argument of increasing road widths to accommodate more vehicles. It's just plain stupid.

80% of Automobile in GB province are NCPs. Far better than custom paid vehicle in term of price (50% less ) and durability. Most of them are japan Assembled. The vehicle used in rest of the Pak are nothing but garbage.

you should compare yourself with China, you are in the wrong forum
or maybe it makes you feel good about your otherwise lack luster country by comparing yourself with a country 1/10th your size which according to your media is just about to go broke and broken in to pieces. by comparing Delhi with Lahore which is 1/3rd the size of delhi.,...how about Delhi Vs. Shanghai, or Mumbai Vs Beijing

Take Mumbai vs Beijing, beijing does not have much skyscrapers existing or U/c compared to Mumbai neither they don't have world's leading stock exchanges.Even Mumbai have more billionaires than Shanghai and posses one of the largest film industries in the world. But most parameters Chinese cities are ahead than Indian cities. As chinese economy slow down, Mumbai,Delhi are growing faster than Shanghai,Beijing from 2015-2019.

But funny part is that not a single parameter, pakistan biggest city like karachi ahead than Delhi/Mumbai.

Overhead bridges or underpasses are needed.

Good news for Pakistani bros!

However increasing number of cars does possess a challenge to city traffic. Yes over-pass, under-pass, are "tactical" solution to traffic jam, the more "strategic" solution is proper urban planning from the very beginning.

With proper planning, cars should be used as leisure, instead of commuting. Chinese cities are not exactly role models in that sense, the explosive growth of cars just in a decade (23 million units sold just in 2014) caught urban planners off guard, resulting in the troublesome situation today.

So encouraging car consumption, & manufacturing, relatively speaking isn't that hard, the challenging part is urban planning (e.g. infrastructure). Within Chinese cities, Beijing is a negative sample, while situations in Shanghai or Guangzhou are better. Looking at the world, cities with best planning include Hong Kong, Tokyo & Singapore, where city roads give priority to usage by commercial vehicles (logistics/trucks, buses, taxis, etc.)

Shanghai Multiple-Overpass

Good luck with that bros!

This is like saying why can't chinese or japanese display board majority in english in china/japan? We also talk about millions and billions, but it is easy for us to say figures like 2.5 lakhs instead like 250 thousand. We are not like blind followers of western standards.

okay, can you atleast be consistent ? :P

You're using millions, lakhs and wrong comma position all in the same paragraph.

.
We need new imported cars, not these Suzuki, Honda & Toyota every time...For God Sake, bring more plants with new companies in Pakistan.!!!!

.
I wish driver training was made mandatory with specific training for specific vehicles. liscence and traffic management made serious as well because the roads of Pakistan are a Zoo at best and I am being nice.

.
Why don't we still manufacture a car in Pakistan?
The prices shall always stay high so long the monopoly of the big 3 remains there wont be much competition and the situation shall prevail since no one is in the market to compete them.

We dont even produce a single engine in Pakistan we still buy the 90's technology mehran that too is just assembled.
How would we have bettet car choices and lower priced products?

We put commas based on figure let's say 1 lakh and so 1,00,000.

This is good news in a way, because a few years from now on, when the demand is above 200,000 units a year, then there will surely be a market for another player to assemble cars here, and i am desperate to have Volkswagen/Renault/Ford come in here.

European and Korean cars set to lure Pak enthusiasts

Foreign automakers plan to enter local market on rising demand

Pakistan's car market has been dominated by Japanese automakers for decades, but a mini-economic revival looks set to attract new players from Europe and Korea into the mix.

Despite heavy taxation on imported vehicles, enthusiasm for owning a car in Pakistan has remained undented - thanks in part to underdeveloped public transport in the country's sprawling cities, but also the social status it brings.

Toyota, Suzuki and Honda car assembly plants already work around the clock in Karachi and Lahore - yet customers can still wait for up to four months for new vehicles to be delivered.

Now demand for cars in the country is accelerating even more quickly, as economic growth has reached its fastest pace since 2008 while renewed investor confidence and easing inflation have spurred consumer spending.

Keen to cash in, a delegation from German auto giant Volkswagen visited the country in recent weeks, according to Pakistani officials and German diplomats.

Miftah Ismail, the chairman of Pakistan Board of Investment who took part in the talks, said Volkswagen was not the only company expressing an interest.

"There are a number of other companies from (South) Korea and Europe that we are talking to who are thinking of setting up assembly plants in Pakistan," he said, without naming the firms.

US and European cars dominated Pakistan's roads in the early years after it gained independence from Britain in 1947.

But fuel prices made their compact, efficient Japanese rivals more popular and from the 1960s onwards manufacturers like Toyota, Suzuki and Honda gained a stranglehold on the market.

Italy's Fiat made a brief foray in the 1990s, while South Korea's Hyundai as well as Daewoo-owned Chevrolet tried - and failed - to gain a foothold in the 2000s before the financial crisis forced them to exit.

Because Pakistan charges heavy duties on imported cars less than three years old, Japanese companies with in-country assembly operations can set prices significantly above the regional average.

The bottom-of-the-range Suzuki Mehran costs the equivalent of $6,300 in Pakistan but sells for around $3,900 in neighbouring India. The most popular Corolla 1.3 sedan starts at Rs1.6 million ($16,000), but buyers have to wait months or pay $1,500 for prompt delivery.

The news that Volkswagen was exploring options to enter the Pakistani market has excited car enthusiasts, who are tired of high prices and limited choices.

"I think it is a great idea because Volkswagen cars are value for money and reliability," said Romano Karim, a fan of the classic Volkswagen Beetles from the 60s and 70s that can often be seen on Pakistan's roads.

Haji Mohammed Shahzad, chairman of the All Pakistan Motor Dealers Association, added that having Volkswagen in the market would help drive costs down.

"The monopoly of big three could be broken if Volkswagen produces at least 20,000-25,000 cars annually," Shahzad said.

Global auto giants are attracted by Pakistan's booming economy, which the International Monetary Fund predicts will grow by 4.5 per cent in the next financial year.

Investor confidence in the medium-sized economy of $232 billion has improved since a new business-friendly government led by Nawaz Sharif took power in 2013, with Karachi's share market among the world's top 10 performers in the past year.

The country is also undergoing a major construction boom driven by Chinese investment after President Xi Jinping visited Islamabad in April to unveil a $46 billion investment plan known as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Car sales have also boomed thanks to the growth of car leasing and financing facilities. Sales in the 11 months to May this year rose 30 per cent from a year earlier, according to Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association.

Baber Kaleem Khan, editor of PakWheels.com magazine, said Volkswagen would be well poised to tap into the lower to mid-range market. "Pakistani automakers haven't really had much competition because their respective domains are well protected by monopolistic business practices," Khan said. - AFP
