Describing nuclear-armed Pakistan as “unquestionably the biggest concern” to stability in South Asia, a leading US daily today said the world powers that worked on the Iran deal should now turn their attention to the “troubled region with growing nuclear risks of its own”.

“The world’s attention has rightly been riveted on negotiations aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear programme. If and when that deal is made final, America and the other major powers that worked on it — China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany — should turn their attention to South Asia, a troubled region with growing nuclear risks of its own,” New York Times said in an editorial.

The editorial titled ‘Nuclear Fears in South Asia’ said the situation in the region cannot be ignored by the major world powers, no matter how preoccupied they may be by the long negotiations with Iran as India, China and Pakistan are moving ahead with plans to deploy nuclear weapons in the Indian Ocean.

The editorial said Pakistan is “hardly alone in its potential to cause regional instability,” with China continuing to build up its nuclear arsenal, now estimated at 250 weapons.

Calling Pakistan as “unquestionably the biggest concern” in the region, the editorial said continuous investments by the country in military arsenal capable of carrying nuclear warheads “reflect the Pakistani Army’s continuing obsession with India as the enemy, a rationale that allows the generals to maintain maximum power over the government and demand maximum national resources.

“At the same time, Pakistan has sunk deeper into chaos, threatened by economic collapse, the weakening of political institutions and, most of all, a Taliban insurgency that aims to bring down the state,” it said.

On India’s part, which has a nuclear arsenal of 110 weapons compared to Pakistan’s 120, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it clear that Islamabad can expect retaliation if Islamic militants carry out a terrorist attack in India, as happened with the 2008 attack in Mumbai, the editorial said.

The two countries have a “troubled history” and deep animosities persist, it said adding that since the last major conflict in 1999, India has focused on becoming a regional economic and political power.

The editorial said that “even more troubling” is the fact that the Pakistani Army has become increasingly dependent on the nuclear arsenal because Pakistan cannot match the size and sophistication of India’s conventional forces.

“Pakistan has left open the possibility that it could be the first to use nuclear weapons in a confrontation, even one that began with conventional arms. Adding short-range tactical nuclear weapons that can hit their targets quickly compounds the danger,” the editorial said.

It added that billions of dollars have been “wasted” by Pakistan on acquiring sophisticated defence systems that otherwise should have been spent on health, education and jobs for its people.

The only source on the web where I can find this rubbish article on is the Times of India @ Pakistan biggest concern to stability in South Asia: NYT - The Times of India

Nonetheless, maybe now the alleged "leading US daily today" can also look deeper into the cause of this regional instability and turn its attention to all the atrocities being perpetrated by the terrorist Indian army in the Pakistani province of Kashmir. Atrocities which have continually been neglected by the world community as they've gotten into bed with Indians on commercial deals in a bid to energize their own stalling economies.

If "the leading US daily today" looks hard enough it may even come to realize that it was India ,who in its quest to match China, initially pursued a nuclear weapons programme, the fruit of which it eventually attempted to use to coerce Pakistan into conceding its territory.

It's sickening to see all the international-Pakistan bashing which tabloid journalists have been perpetrating to cash in on Pakistan's questionable international standing. Instead of just berating us for the sake of money and momentary fame, if these pseudo-intellectuals would care to delve deeper into the regional dynamics and political history of South-East Asia they'd be more than just pleasantly surprised to see to who the blame actually lies with.

Actually I'm surprised "the leading US daily today" didn't suggest deploying troops to Pakistan and China to help the Indians out.

Pakistan is being made a scape goat.Lol
America wants to divert the media attention from the nuclear deal with Iran and ergo this statement. I'm not saying Pakistan doesnt have its hands in the cookie jar, but its not the ONLY one. The giant panda bear in the east and the ferocious bear of north 're a cause of concern to their neighbors and Uncle sam (also).

The US daily got it right.

Pakistan is the only source of instability in entire South Asia. The entire South Asia apart from Pakistan is focusing on good governance and improving their economy and people.

Meanwhile Pakistan is the only one who keeps fighting on Islam, spreading terrorism globally and ensuring that it acts as a front of foreign powers.

Last line tells one thing Indians should be the last group to teach us this when they have biggest number of people under poverty line.

God forbids that the so called TNW of pakistan doesn't fall into the hands of terrorists , otherwise else there shall be the biggest terrorist orchestrated tragedy, the humanity has ever seen before or imagined.

In other words, don't fvck with us. Plain and simple.

As for the concern... Do something about it if you can. Your "concerns" are Pakistan's lifeline. The only reason why Pakistan hasn't become another Afghanistan/Iraq to date. We as Pakistanis know what really is so concerning to these fvckers... It is indeed their inability to hurt, humiliate and dictate Pakistan like an absolute satellite state. Ain't just happening. Better get used to these concerns...

Those nukes are used as a licence to carry on terrorist activities in the region by Pakistan...we will nuke Iran, we will nuke afghanistan, we will nuke India if they oppose our terrorists.

LMAO This coming from an Indian who belongs to a country which has used terrorism as a tool against Pakistan inside Afghanistan. Your country aids child molesters and human rights abusers. Who are you fooling here?

Pakistan didn't start with the production of nuclear weapons. India did. Pakistan simply followed suit for its own protection. India is responsible for starting a nuclear arms race in South Asia. Not Pakistan. Stop crying like a crocodile now and get used to these realities.

If you try harming Pakistan in any way, you will feel the wrath. If not, you got nothing to fear. No rocket science. Yes, we're not going to lie down like Afghanistan or Iraq and be invaded by hostile countries if that is what you mean.

.
They can shove their concern up their filthy @ss...India's nuclear tests and possessions of Nucs and ICBM is not a concern but Pakistan's reaction to Indian's nucs is destability..what a logic

No they are only to cook Indian's if they try any misadventure,If you don't wanna be grilled then stay within your God forsaken borders,Fair and simple, not a rocket science...
