ISLAMABAD: Hours after North Korea accused Islamabad Police of breaking the Vienna Convention following a raid on country's embassy in the federal capital on March 7, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad on Thursday said that Islamabad has "apologised" for the incident that had occurred due to a "misunderstanding".

"We have apologised [to the North Korean mission, the incident had] happened out of misunderstanding," the interior minister said in a press conference in Islamabad.

A report published in The News, said that the embassy had stated in a letter to the Foreign Office and Islamabad's IGP that police entered the mission's premises from the backdoor at approximately 5pm on March 7 and harassed its workers.

The mission staff reminded them that the embassy was exercising the inviolable sovereign territory of DPR Korea and asked them to immediately stop this brutal act against the embassy, the letter read.

However, the letter said that the policemen searched the storeroom in the back yard on the pretence of looking for something and threatened the mission staff with guns who tried to stop them.

The letter also stated that the policemen damaged the embassy's property.

In response, the Foreign Office spokesperson said the Islamabad Police had been informed that they did not have the authority to enter the embassy premises without permission.

"They have also been informed that they cannot perform such a raid next time without having clearance from the Foreign Office," the spokesperson said.

In recent days, the Islamabad Police have been raiding different spots in the Federal Capital without prior permission from relevant authorities.

The Islamabad Police had admitted that officers had entered the North Korean embassy and apologised for the violation of convention.

According to Islamabad Police spokesperson, the law enforcement personnel broke the law will face serious punishment.

"We apologise for entering the embassy," the spokesperson added. He added that the Shalimar Police had raided the North Korean Embassy after receiving reports of a large amount of liquor on the premises.

North Korea embassy in Islamabad is most famous for being suppliers of quality imported liquor :D

The police need to be severely and visibly reprimanded for this incident. Creating diplomatic incidents are a serious matter which can lead to unintended consequences. Someone needs to be sacked for this to set the right precedent, because the police need to know their limits. I would hope the foreign minister personally conveys regret to the foreign minister of the DPRK on this matter.

BTW, isn’t the embassy inside the diplomatic enclave? Isn’t their a special police force for that area?

P.s. Is the North Korean leader looking slimmer? DPRK might be about to test ICBMs (possibly solid fueled) soon it is alleged, and he was pictured in a related facility or testing area. If people don’t think his health is an issue anymore, they can expect him to be in charge for decades to come, and maintaining decent enough relations with a nuclear power is in any country’s interest.

I doubt they violated Vienna convention without any proper reason. It is possible they were hiding something big.

Big bottle of Jack Daniels which the police wala's wanted for themselves.

No doubt about it. These police walas are probably dealers themselves. Although if the want a huge score then they should turn to Irani Embassy which is the biggest supplier of liquor to Pakistani Elites. They are biggest smugglers of Russian Vodka in exchange of $$$$.

Vienna convention does not cover any acts done under the intention of personal business under his personal choice.
More of a face saving measure done by sheikh sahib to not escalate it further.

(b) An action relating to succession in which the diplomatic agent is involved as executor,
administrator, heir or legatee as a private person and not on behalf of the sending State;
(c) An action relating to any professional or commercial activity exercised by the diplomatic agent in

We have a north korean embassy

If u remove police in Pakistan, crime will actually go down. Majority of the force is either illiterate, incompetent or corrupt.

This is a serious incident and will have implications.

Rapists and thugs are openly roaming the streets at night, but lets waste police time and resources trying to catch alcohol smugglers
