On August 14, 1947, Pakistan got independence from the British and Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) was a part of Pakistan until March 25, 1971

The Pakistan envoy to Bangladesh has appreciated the contributions of the Muslim leaders of Bengal in the creation of Pakistan.

High Commissioner Imran Ahmed Siddiqui recalled the struggles of Muslims in the then Bengal province and said: "Their efforts are very well documented both in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Today, we remembered all our leaders and prayed for their souls."

His appreciation came on Friday in speaking to the Turkey-based Anadolu Agency on the occasion of the 73rd Independence Day of Pakistan, reported the Pakistani daily, The Express Tribune.

The Pakistan mission in Dhaka celebrated the day at its premises on a limited scale due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Siddiqui said: "The leaders of Bengal – Nawab Sir Salimullah, Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, AK Fazlul Huq, Moulvi Tamizuddin, among several others, are part of the glorious history of our struggle for Pakistan."

Referring to relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh, he said both countries "share unbreakable bonds of history, religion and culture. I am sure these bonds will become even stronger in the days ahead."

On August 14, 1947, Pakistan got independence from the British and Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) was a part of Pakistan until March 25, 1971.

On December 16, 1971, Bangladesh was liberated from the Pakistani occupation forces after a nine month long Liberation War.

Tense relations

Relations between the two countries have remained tense for the last many years as the countries have yet to overcome the bitter memories of 1971, according to The Express Tribune report.

Besides, the decision of the incumbent Bangladesh government about bringing to book and thus execution of top leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on charges of committing war crimes in 1971, took the relationship between the two countries to a new low.

The bitterness in the relationship mounted as Pakistan stood against the trials, terming them politically motivated.

It also accused Dhaka of violating the 1974 trilateral agreement between Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, the report said.

Relations between the two countries worsened when Pakistan's National Assembly in 2016 passed a unanimous resolution condemning the execution of Jamaat leaders in Bangladesh.

Subsequently, the government of Bangladesh was reluctant to approve the appointment of a Pakistani high commissioner for 20 months.

Eventually, Islamabad had to make a new proposal for the appointment of Imran Ahmed Siddiqui as the envoy to Dhaka.

The appointment was approved by Bangladesh in November 2019 and Siddiqui joined his workplace in January this year.

The cold relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh has recently started thawing, with observers saying China played a role in mediation, according to the report.

It said quiet diplomatic efforts are being initiated by the two countries as diplomatic sources have revealed that the current regional security environment compelled the two to reset their troubled ties.

In July, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan called his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina over the phone and wanted to know about the coronavirus situation in Bangladesh.

And in August, Pakistan's High Commissioner Imran Ahmed Siddiqui held a rare meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen in Dhaka.

Actually Bengal was the birth place of muslim league and eventually Pakistan. After the reorganization of Bengal in 1905 with Majority muslims in East Bengal and Assam as one province and hindu majority West Bengal another, the muslims of Bengal realized how beneficial it is for muslims. Hindus as usual carried out massive violence and dissolved the muslim majority province.

Now Bangladeshis must decide, if they still believe in the two nation theory, Bangladesh will continue to exist as a strong muslim country, if they do not believe in it. Bangladesh has the option of merging with hindu india.

Two nation theory is alive and well. Muslim bengal is older than pakistan and there is no chance whatsoever of us merging with hindu india....

Don't care about an obsolete two nation theory, a three nation theory would be more apt.

Anyways I do believe in a Bengali nation theory.

We had historically been an independent region bound together by language.

We are now a nation bound together by our language and culture more than anything else.

And we will continue to thrive and grow into the far reaches of the foreseeable and unforeseeable future.

Bengalis will always be here, in one form or another, as we have been for a millennia.

Indian bengalis fought half the fight and then took the easy way out, if only they could feel what real freedom feels like....

True, recently started reading history of the subcontinent, it seems Bengal region is the only region that survived on a common identity, culture for so long, most other contemporary states have dissolved long back

Indeed, we are extremely lucky to have a nation-state of our own. Very few nations outside Europe and East Asia can be called a nation state as homogeneous as ours. I believe the common identity has shaped the recent economic growth in a major way, and will likely continue to do so in the future as it has done elsewhere like Japan or Korea.

What's is he talking about? (What 1974 trilateral agreement?)

Bangladesh is already a very good Muslim country. The root of Islam is too much deep inside Bangladesh.

Yes we are not yet very strong and that's the reason we have a goal and that is forces goal 2030. Once we get our necessary military equipment, we will no longer be very much diplomatic to our hostile surroundings.

We believe that there are some key differences between bravery and being suicidal.

That's why we have good diplomatic tie with India.

But after reaching our forces goal will still won't buy the enmity of India as it's not our style . We will only consider India as enemy if it started direct enmity .

We are Switzerland of the east , and will not start enmity before anyone directly want to buy our enmity.

However we will not remain diplomatic too after our goal achieved ,if India keep showing dadagiri to us.

The agreement in which Bangladesh had agreed to not prosecute Pakistani POWs for war crimes and they were handed back to Pakistan. I think the amnesty was a general one towards the Pakistan loyalists too A.K.A the Rajakars. In that agreement, Pakistan also acknowledged excesses were committed during the war.

The reason the relationship soured with Pakistan in recent times is that, the politicians in Pakistan interpreted the hanging of JeI leaders as Bangladesh violating that agreement in 1974. They raised the issue in Pakistani Parliament and SHW didn't like it. In reality, it was simply a brutal and thuggish political maneuver on SHW's part, and has very little to do with 1971 war. So, the relationship with Pakistan became cold since that event.

..

Why not merge with india? West bengal doesnot seem to like merging with Bangladesh because West bengal sees itself as more hindu than bengali. Its your choice.

If two nation theory is dead, so is the need for a muslim Bangladesh.

Two nation theory emerged in Bangladesh and it will never be dead.

However , the real reason of two nation was not Muslim Idea ,but it's Hindutva idea . When Vinayak savarkar introduced Hindutva instead of Bengali nation unity , then Muslims of this region decided to choose their own way .

In future two nation theory will be stronger because BJP will not let us forget it.

But I prefer Bengali Muslim nationality where every other religious community will enjoy the same benefit since they are loyal to country.

And every traitors should be perished regardless of their religious identity.

You are way off.

West Bengal is the most progressive (and might I mention - anti Hindutva) of almost all states in India.

More than one third of their population is Muslim. The RSS and BJP has targeted WB hard for this reason. It is the singlemost important anti-Modi state in India.

Evidence is against this assertion. WB is well integrated with the hindu identity. May be in the future, there could be a greater Bengal which actually my leader Jinnah (R.A) had accepted back in 47.

A whole of Bengal more or less neutral to Indo-Pak scenarios. But this is highly unlikely but not impossible.

Many of your own countrymen disagree and this is a question you must resolve yourselves.
I will only analyze from a Pakistani POV.

I believe Bangladesh will be targeted because India needs the vital chittagong port for North eastern states as China becomes more involved. Merger with India could be and has been proposed by many Bangladeshis who are basically indian agents. But whatever happens, may happen best for your people.
