For a Good Night's Rest, They Huddle In Bunkers: Life At the LoC

Just after dinner, people of village Trewa in Jammu and Kashmir slink into a narrow bunker with their families.

Men, women and children, all squeeze into a space meant for a little more than a dozen people. Moments later, the shelling and firing begins.

Only a few can spread out on the ground to sleep; the rest sit or stand. They take turns on watch duty.

The spurt in firing from Pakistan has taken these villagers back in time, back to the nineties when attacks from across the border were a daily feature.

In the past 12 days, there have been 14 incidents - 70 since the Narendra Modi government took charge in May.

Villagers near the border have been driven to abandoned bunkers which haven't been used for nearly 10 years.

The hideouts are being cleaned up for fresh use. There are dozens of them, hidden behind bushes and mounds, their entrance just wide enough to let in one person at a time.

Hundreds of people migrated from their villages close to the International Border in the 1990s, during the peak of militancy in the state.

After the ceasefire of 2003 between both countries, many border residents returned home. Many of them are wondering if life will ever be normal.

"All our kids huddle together, close to the walls of the underground bunker when shelling becomes intense; we take shelter in bunkers with our children", said Joginder Paul Resident from Arnia in RS Pura sector.

Border hostilities have directly impacted the peace process. India this week suspended talks with Pakistan over its envoy's meetings with Kashmiri separatists and the spike in ceasefire violations.

There are inputs that militants are regrouping across the border to sneak into India in large numbers.

"Groups across the border are waiting for a chance but our boys are very, very alert and the border is well-guarded. We are also retaliating", said Rakesh Sharma a senior officer of the Border Security Force.

3 civilians included 1 woman killed by indian firing .. Dozens injured included children in this month alone !

And not a single causality accross the border.

.
But it is just the Indian side that hits civilians along the LoC, right?:

Why are Indian BSF targeting us?

o_Oo_O

And not a single causality accross the border.
Just like in the Israel-Palestine conflict where the casualties figures are so one-sided it doesn't mean only one side is firing on the other merely one side better protects its civilians than the other.

Comparing Pakistan with Palestine n India with Israel .. Na unlike Palestinian we can hit back with equal force but we chose not to because it hurts our interests in Kashmir... Although we show no love for indian troops thts for sure.

I'm not talking about the ability to hit back but ability to protect civilians- does Pakistan have bunkers for its civilians along the LoC?

In 13th ceasefire violation in the past 11 days, Pakistani troops opened another front along the Line of Control in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir and targeted a mosque and residential houses in night-long firing.

Pakistani troops started indiscriminate and unprovoked firing in Mangalnarh forward belt of Rajouri's Manjakote sub-sector during midnight on Wednesday, a senior police officer said here.

The firing continued till 0400 hours on Thursday and several bullets hit a mosque and two houses triggering panic among the people living along the LoC, the officer said.

The mosque and two houses belonging to Mohammad Iqbal and Mohammad Akram, both residents of Mangalnarh, were damaged during election.

But there was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the firing, the police officer said.

Indian troops took positions and responded with equal caliber weapons to Pakistan's firing which resulted in intermittent exchange of fire.

There has been 13 ceasefire violations along the Indo-Pak border during past 11 days, and 15 ceasefire violations in the month of August.

On August 20, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire and resorted to firing at Indian forward posts along the LoC in Hamirpur sub-sector of Poonch district, prompting Indian forces to retaliate.

On August 19, Pakistani troops opened unprovoked firing from small arms and automatic weapons at forward posts in Hamirpur sub-sector in Poonch.

On the intervening night of August 17 and 18, Pakistani troops intensified its offensive and resorted to night-long heavy mortar shelling and firing of automatic weapons targeting 20 border out-posts (BoPs) and civilians areas along the international border in Arnia and RS Pura sub-sectors of Jammu district, in which one villager was injured.

Security officials feel the heavy firing and shelling in areas along the LoC and international border in Poonch and Jammu sectors is aimed at facilitating infiltration bids of armed militants into Jammu and Kashmir.

In July, eight cases of ceasefire violation by Pakistan were reported. In June, Pakistan violated the ceasefire five times along the LoC and IB in Jammu region. There were 19 incidents of ceasefire violation along the LoC in April-May.

I can not only show you houses with roofs blown off my indian mortar fire but ppl killed by indian firing on villages... There is a difference between purposely targeting civilian areas killing civilians and accidents of mortars landing near populated areas... To prove tht I gave you example of 3 dead civilians n dozens injured by unpvovked fire by indian forces on heavily populated areas accross the LOC on our side.. In just 20 days.

.
Good riddance-
We can too play the civilians killing game-
Back to even stevens-
Oh I forgot we have the upper hand-
