Pak paying heavily for its mistakes in the 1970s: Tony Blair

NEW DELHI: Pakistan is "paying heavily" for its mistakes in the 1970s when it started mixing religion with politics and promoted extremism, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has said.
"I think Pakistan is paying a heavy price for the mistakes of 1970s by linking religion with politics and developing religious schools which are, in some cases, dangerous sources of extremism," Blair told Karan Thapar in an interview to a news channel.
The former British prime minister was responding to queries relating to the role of ISI in spreading terrorism and its links with the Haqqani group in Afghanistan.
When asked if the US, after eliminating Osama bin laden, should also go after the Haqqani faction, Blair said it was something which the Americans have to decide.
"The trouble with these groups is that there is no way to use them wisely. On these issues like Pakistan might have to say about its influence in Afghanistan vis-a-vis India's influence there, there will be nothing good out of supporting these groups," he said.
"If ISI is engaged in such activities, in the end it will not merely affect US, UK, Afghanistan or India, it poisons the atmosphere in Pakistan also," Blair said.
The former British Prime Minister said that if there was any linkage between the ISI and terror groups such as the Haqqani group and the Lashkar-e-Toiba, "it is a mistake."
Blair said there was a need to engage "modern and open-minded" Pakistanis who are involved in a struggle against the extremists.
"We have to see how we can engage elements in Pakistan who believe that this was a mistake. The best way is to allow Pakistan to change and evolve and there are a lot of decent people in Pakistan," he said.

I think Pakistan has made mistakes in the past and coming from anyone else i would accept it. The irony is that a moronic moron like Blair makes this statement?
Entering Iraq on the evidence doctored by Blairs government (The Kelly enquiry ) is one of his biggest crimes that the whole world suffered. Thousands of innocent people died because of his lies.
Its an alarming thought that this guy is walking around the middle east blessing them with his lack of honesty. I find it distasteful ironic that he wants to now comment on others mistakes

Everyone knows this. The question is what Pakistan have learnt from it?

Decades of friendship with US has got you where you are. Decades of friendship with China could not help you stop getting where you are. Wars with India has got you Bangladesh. So its better to be friend's with India..

Its always going to be better as friends with India, Question is.. with religious extremism (not to be confused with practicing religion) going overboard and violent in Pakistan. is it even smart for India to be friends with Pakistan??

Well I think Blair is a liar. What about where UK allows extremists in London under asylum to preach hatred during the seveties eighties and ninties. what about saudi sponsered mosques in UK who are teaching a very harsh form of islam why dont they upset their bum chums the saudi royal families. Londonbombers were indoctrinated in UK not pakistan. And one of them went to saudi sponsered mosque. Its just propaganda and excuse to blame pakistan for all their ills. Anyway why we care what this war criminal says?

I fail to understand your question. My apology. Do you mean that since some religious extremism going violent in Pakistan, no one should be friend's with Pakistan?

If it is then no. China has been a good supporter and so can we. The problem is, some terrorists are operating on your soil which are targeting India. You guys send terrorists in Kashmir (you cal them freedom fighters). You have Indian underworld don living safe in Karachi (though your authorities may not have any idea is understandable after OBL case). Hope all this would be solved through dialogues.

At this point, the best option for India is to maintain a semblance of normalcy.

No bold moves from either side can pay off. Both sides are not positioned for anything more than going through the motions.

China is very aggressive with Pakistan originated terror. However, the Uighur issue is not such an attractive brochure for potential militants as is Kashmir and the prospect of "fighting with Hindu's".
India must take caution, and while a solution to Kashmir should be sought ASAP..
Normalcy in tourism and transit must be weighed against how much Pakistani society has moved to control the extremism(and not normal religious practice) within its midst.

Right! Do you remember how he fudged the intelligence about WMDs in Iraq as an excuse to invade that country with the US of A? He was Bush's pet poodle (They were probably having an affair!! Jeeez!)

And now he comes out with gems that are ridiculous and not even worth the weight of the hot air he blows out. Can someone tell him to just shut the fu*k up? These so called Western 'leaders' are part of the Illuminati that strive for a Western dominated New World Order. They can go climb the nearest tree! :sniper:

Makes one think.. would Pakistan and India still be the same had the US stayed out of the region?
