Parliamentarian accuses Pakistan of throwing games​

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani parliamentarian has accused the national cricket team of deliberately losing matches in this month's Champions Trophy tournament and has demanded an explanation from its coach, captain and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.



‘We will be meeting with them on Oct. 13 as we feel the team deliberately lost the games against Australia and New Zealand,’ Jamshed Dasti, chairman Standing Committee on Sports in the Pakistan Lower House, told the Associated Press on Tuesday.


Pakistan was defeated by Australia in the last group match last week before losing to New Zealand in the semifinal.


‘They lost to Australia just to keep India out of the tournament,’ Dasti said.


Australia might not have qualified for the semifinal had Pakistan won against the defending champion and India could have advanced had they defeated West Indies by a big margin.


‘There are lots of doubts on the performance of the team and we feel it has to be cleared by the PCB officials and the team management,’ Dasti said.



‘The way we lost in the semifinal, it has left the whole nation disappointed and the PCB has to give answers.’


Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam and captain Younis Khan returned home Monday, while PCB chairman Ijaz Butt remained in South Africa to attend International Cricket Council meetings.


It is not the first time that the parliamentary committee has summoned PCB officials, however the committee has only the power to give recommendations to the prime minister and the president.


‘This time I can assure you that we will make sure our recommendations be given due considerations,’ Dasti said.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is the patron-in-chief of the PCB.

Personally I don't believe in these allegations. Everyone knows how close was the match against Australia and about the semi final, every team has its bad days. That's about it imo. People in our countries should learn to accept defeats gracefully.

Not to link this particular episode with corruption, but any individual's intention or what is he upto inside his heart can only be known by God or himself.

As for Younus's catch, well I personally dont think that Younus would be 'that' sort of a person, u know, like someone who would be sold for money. The match agaisnt Aussies was a lost game in the start anyways, had our bowlers not made inroads, and made match interesting and close at the end, no one would have even thought of objecting to the close outcome. Along with so may other reasons, Kamran Aklam not coming up to the stumps & not hitting the stumpa was amongst those reasons as well.

I will never forget Younus khan saying at the toss while responding to Interviewrer's question regarding injury, " hahah ya every one is fit accpet me"........

I mean WTF......why the heck are you playing then?? Just becsue you are captain or your team says nahen nahen Younus bhaee aap khailain gay.....

But Younus isnt the sole responsible for our loss......Afridi's silly shot....bad luck of Yousuf getting out un-luckily....Rana's idiot bowling and his silly shot.....

So coming back on topic........these accusations will always be levelled especially when the media creates such a hype and when we lose..they take a 180 degree turn and our amature audiences start believing what is fed to them....media in-return plays what their audience wants to listen to...

This is what we call Twisting the Facts... and Indian newspaper has done double PHD in this....

Ok, Captian & coach done some blunders like missing the catch, not welcoming inform bowler like Muhammad Asif, power field placement, not putting pressure on batsman etc (& may be they were kicked out because of above reasons).. and also we lost the match because of some other factors like poor empiring... BUT fixing the important match is too much..

If this allegation would be on Pak vs Aus match, then it could be acceptable... looks like indians newspapers still can't digest the reality that they are out because of pakistan..

Pakistan accused of cricket match-fixing by own government


Pakistan cricket is embroiled in a new controversy after the national team were accused of deliberately losing two games at the Champions Trophy by a government official.

The chairman of the National Assembly's standing committee on sports claimed in a television interview that Pakistan lost to Australia to knock traditional rivals India out of the limited-overs tournament in South Africa.

Australia won by two wickets by running a bye on the final ball of the closing Group A tie on September 30, which ensured they reached the semifinals and ended India's hopes.

Captain Younis Khan then dropped a simple catch as his side lost to New Zealand by five wickets in Saturday's semifinal.

"We went with a pre-determined mind to lose the match against Australia," Jamshed Ahmed Dasti told Pakistan TV channel Geo TV on Tuesday.

"Our intention was to keep India out. It was a deliberate decision to lose the match against India."

Dasti said that the team also intentionally lost the match to New Zealand, who were beaten in Monday's final by defending champions Australia.

"That's why the NA Standing Committee on Sports has called in captain Younis Khan, coach Intikhab Alam and [Pakistan Cricket Board] chairman Ijaz Butt for investigations," he said.

"The team played well and tried hard. It is unfortunate they couldn't qualify for the final, which every player wanted to do, but they had one bad day against New Zealand," PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar told the Express Cricket Web site.

"As far as we are concerned, the team did well in the Champions Trophy and their performance was satisfactory."

Former captain Rashid Latif criticized Dasti for making serious allegations without backing them up with proof.

"I was one of those who first raised the issue of match fixing in international cricket, so I know what I am talking about. I can say the team did its best and played hard in the tournament -- a few mistakes cost them a place in the final," Latif told Express Cricket.

"I think parliamentarians should first look at the corruption in the government before talking about cricket. It is unfortunate that when the team needs backing, a parliamentarian should make such allegations."

The accusations are another blow for Pakistan's cricketing fortunes.

The sub-continent nation lost the rights to host the Champions Trophy due to security issues -- it was postponed last year and switched to South Africa -- and was then ruled out of staging the 2011 World Cup.

Earlier this year, veteran fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar missed the Twenty20 World Cup after needing treatment for genital warts.

Akhtar, once Pakistan's most feared weapon, has constantly clashed with the PCB, which banned him for hitting a teammate with a bat in 2007 and threatened him with court action following a public feud which ended with a five-year suspension that he successfully appealed.

The PCB also punished him for testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug nandrolone in 2006, while fellow fast bowler Mohammad Asif was arrested in Dubai for possession of illegal drugs last year.

I am pretty sure every pakistani would have wanted to play india in the final and if we did fix the match why leave it to the last bowl?

May be because the bowlers were trying trying their best. A fixing allegation need not include all the playing 11.
