PAF brings its brass back in the air.

So it turns out PAF Chief Air Marshal Sohail Aman has ordered all of his base Commanders and other senior officers to start clocking regular flight hours again.

This is in the back drop of CAS flying combat mission in Shawal and participating in combat exercises as a Wizo.

The objective is to keep the Squadron and base Commanders in sync with evolving dynamics of air warfare to keep pilots and commanders on the same page during operational planning and operations.

That's a very ignorant way of looking at it. It's like expecting a Brigadier to lead a Tank formation without ever stepping into one being used in battle. If commanders are unaware of the capabilities of new systems, their operational thinking will confine to the capabilities they had during active field service.

CAS and our Wing Commanders stopped active flying long ago, while their Squadron Leaders know the capabilities of Block 52+, or JFTs, they dont because they are tuned into think and plan according to what a block 15 and a Mirage 3 can do.

They should also get to ride the new bicycles..

This is a good approach, it also makes more of these senior officers suitable as CCS instructors in the long-run. It'll also increase the longevity of the training costs that went into these pilots in the first place, and with locally sourced JF-17s, there is no excuse (besides fuel I guess) to clock hours. I wouldn't be surprised if some CCS aspects are downstreamed to more pilots, especially as they take on multiple tasks.

very good decison... commandment getting refresh and updated.. then tehy can make better decision and comprehend pilot's input quickly... plus it gives a message of leadership... that every officer doesn't hesitate doing a job/going for a mission as chief himself doesn't sit in office but work in field
a correlation w'd be be saying "a teacher if stop learning new course book/tools/software he lags behind with time comapred to fellow teachers"

That's the reason some high ranking PAF officials were completely astonished once they realised the real capabilities of Block-52s once it was used in ground strike missions.... as the source said, it was way beyond their expectations.

I will tend to disagree. Until OC wing officers (Group Captain) keep flying regularly, as base commander it goes down to negligible as administrative duties and staff work increases. Those who are deployed in AHQ of course does not get enough flying. But we should keep in mind limitation imposed due to aging effect. Yes air experience on new technology is something else, but going into regular combat flying is asking bit too much. I am sure CAS would not have given such directive. His flight into active strike zone does not mean that he was the pressing the trigger.If you see the video he climbs into rear cockpit

When are they going to order more? At least 2 more squadrons would be good, with US willing to get Pakistan into alliance against IS, we can get them and deploy a squadron in Middle East. Win-Win.

Wouldn't surprise me if the PAF keeps an eye out for reaching its originally envisioned force of ~55 Block-52+. But it might try to make up for any shortfalls in that plan by pursuing surplus C/Ds and upgrading them.

Anything will do at the moment, with JF-17 still slated to take more than 5 years for enough numbers and fast obsolete Mirage and F-7s needing retirement, used F-16s would provide a quick, cheap boost to the firepower with minimum training, logistics and planning headache.

Used F-16s upgraded with AN/APG-68v9 radars and JHMCS would be a solid capability boost on a budget.
