China has suffered its first setback in an escalating tug of war with western powers for dominance in the Pacific after it failed to win support from island countries in the region for a comprehensive partnership centred on security.

At a virtual meeting with Wang Yi, the Chinese foreign minister, on Monday, leaders from eight Pacific Island nations agreed to co-operate in five areas including health, disaster management and agriculture. But Wang said that more discussion was needed on the China-Pacific Island Countries Common Development Vision that Beijing had proposed.

The blow to China came after the US and Australia strongly pushed back against Beijing’s efforts to entice more of the small, mostly impoverished Pacific Island nations into its embrace.

Makes no sense at all
China is more in economic term, nothing else.
Last time China providing security to Cambodia the population shrunk by 1/3 by mass homicide.
Instead, Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore can provide security to those small nations.

I don't even understand what set back it was, China had never had a security pact aimed at another country, it has always been up to the host countries to ask for assistance, we dont force people to give us bases or train their police. Stop being a paranoid..... Better stop youngsters from gunning down each other in US first. Lol

That’s how propaganda works, even though in their encounters with Chinese, you’ll find far more victims of pickpockets and scams perpetrated against the Chinese rather than the other way around.

Interesting Chinese went ahead with Pacific Island nations

I expected pacts with nations like North Korea, Cambodia and Iran

I guess for China even the low hanging fruits turned out sour

Do you think the Chinese base in Djibouti has to do with an invasion? This has more to do with the Chinese military being denied staging sites in an area near Australia and New Zealand.

I'm sure you wouldn't want Israel to sign some Security pact with Nepal. That doesn't mean they are going to invade them...however that's puts the potential Israeli military only 800km from your capital.

Several of the island nations China courted are New Zealand dependancies. Cook Islanders have New Zealand citizenship and more than half of their population lives in the New Zealand mainland. It's a similar situation with Nuie. They are heavily dependant on foreign aid from NZ and use our currency. Culturally, economically and diplomatically they are too closely aligned with NZ to completely shift their allegiance to China.

Other island nations such as Samoa, Fiji and Tonga are closely aligned with NZ and Australia, and half of Samoa (american Samoa) is a US dependancy. US has defence treaties with most of the nations China attempted to coerce.

China overplayed it's hand with this attempt to undermine New Zealand, Australian, UK and US sovereignty in the region. It asked for far too much. Throwing a few bribes around didn't work, it doesn't compensate for basically selling their soveriegnty and freedom for Chinese autocracy.

The same for Fijian against Indians. The Natives can't compete with hardworking Chinese. But ethnic Chinese are different from China, ethnic Chinese had been in the Pacific for at least 100 years matey. Its like saying do the Turks like the Greeks.

Nope, simple experience by observation. Zero respect for nature or culture

The security pact was always with just Solomon. Trade pacts, real ones, not the symbolic zero substance one like ipef, takes yrs to negotiate, let alone a security pact with multiple countries.

The west simply hyped it up knowing it wont be signed now just to then say it's a setback.
That's why I always say nobody can turn the west into indians like China can. lol

That's just ur personal experience. Nobody, certainly not Chinese, have respect for a person like u.

On the contrary, I see far more from the west that has repeatedly shown absolute disrespect for other culture, disdain of the cultural different and quick to judge and lecture others based on its own cultural norm.
