What's new

Over $50 bln lost to software piracy,Bangladesh had the highest software piracy rate

I Love Piracy .. why ??

Rs 7000 Windows 7 ??? who will pay this amount , if he earns only 10 K a month?

its the software developers problem .. the rate should be Rs 300 .. so then people will buy the original copy otherwise no one will buy in Developing Countries ..
Its not like your computer won't work without Windows. Why not get a Linux distribution? Fedora and Ubuntu can give any version of Windows a run for its money depending upon the usage.

When there are highly competitive FREE options this argument goes out the window.

.
Use Linux (desktop distro) instead of Windows ?

BTW these days we have many good Anti-Virus free of cost eg. Avast, AVG, Avira. Why pay and install bloatware like Norton, McAfee.

Thanks to Piracy, Game developers prefer console platform more than PC gaming, everyone suffering.

My formula - Download Movie, Game, Software via illegal method, if it pleases you, then you must think of those who have worked hard to develop these products.

.
So far Microsoft concern, give me single software name which is not copied or started from some free opensource software

btw i prefer to have opensource products then buying pirated dvd

It's not the question of copying or developing it from some free source. Please try and understand that companies pay huge amount as salary to its employees to develop these softwares. If it is not recovered, it affects their business and in turn the economy.

I don't know how old are you, but I am sure you would understand it later in your life.

Open source.. lol! So you are using Red hat or something?

Oh if you're so concerned about your money then start using red hat.

Using pirated softwares is just like making someone clean your house and then refuse to pay him for his services.

That's the reason why they are USA and Europe and we are India and Pakistan.

Over $50 bln lost to software piracy:
SINGAPORE: Software piracy cost technology companies more than 50 billion dollars around the world last year, with Asia accounting for the largest share of losses, an industry report said Tuesday.

Despite successes in the fight to protect intellectual property rights, on average 43 percent of software used in computers worldwide in 2009 was pirate, from 41 percent the year prior, the Business Software Alliance (BSA) said.

Worldwide, piracy losses reached 51.4 billion dollars in 2009, with 16.5 billion dollars of this in the Asia-Pacific, the annual report found.

The deluge of counterfeits was largely due to the growth of the personal computer market in Brazil, India and China, the group, which has a base in Singapore, said.

However, last year's losses worldwide were three percent down from 2008 while the rate of pirated software use fell in 54 economies, remained steady in 38 and rose in 19.

The average piracy rate in Asia-Pacific was 59 percent, which means that of the more than 900 million units installed last year, more than 530 million were unlicensed, said Victor Lim, a vice president at IDC, which carried out the study with the software alliance.

Bangladesh had the highest software piracy rate in Asia, followed by Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Vietnam, with China and India also among the most prominent culprits.

"This study makes clear that while efforts to bring down piracy levels in the Asia-Pacific are enjoying some success, dollar losses at over 16.5 billion (dollars) remain the highest in the world," said Jeffrey Hardee, BSA's vice president and regional director.

"This is unacceptable and there is still much to be done to engage governments, businesses and consumers on the risks and impact of software piracy."

The BSA said that for every 100 dollars of legitimate software sales in 2009, another 75 dollars-worth of unlicensed programmes were sold.

Ex-Soviet state Georgia was the world's top pirate user, with 95 percent of all software deemed illegal.

That was followed by Zimbabwe (92 percent), Bangladesh (91 percent), Moldova (91 percent), Armenia, and Yemen (90 percent).

The United States had the lowest piracy rate with 20 percent, followed by Japan (21 percent), Luxembourg (21 percent), New Zealand (22 percent) and Australia (25 percent).

Singapore was the only Southeast Asian economy in the report's list of the 30 economies with the lowest piracy rates.

Hardee said that apart from global technology giants, small and medium firms, including those in Asia are being affected by software theft as it prevents them from growing domestically and expanding overseas.

He said at a media briefing that a 10-percentage point reduction in the software piracy rate over four years in Asia-Pacific would "directly contribute" 41 billion dollars to the region's economies.

It will also create 435,000 jobs, generate another 5.4 billion dollars in taxes and increase revenues to local vendors by 33 billion dollars.

"There is a compelling case here for governments to bring down piracy levels," Hardee said.

In an interview with a French news agency after the briefing, Hardee said companies using bootleg computer programmes, rather than individuals, were inflicting the heaviest damage.

"Surprisingly, quite a few listed companies are caught using pirated software. They just have unsophisticated or no software management policies in place," he said. "It's quite shocking."

The News.
:azn:

Well I wont call it a $50 billion loss. If there is no pirated software available, the huge lot out there won't use that piece of software at all.
The point is that all this usage is due to piracy and not need. There is no such need that can drive average people in ( at least Pakistan) to BUY licence. Keeping in mind that there is an Open Source equivalent available for almost all the propriety software.

.
I cannot find the link right now but I heard this interview from some Microsoft official who said that "we are against Software Piracy but if Software Piracy IS to take place we recommend that our products be pirated."
The Idea is that if they completely disallow Piracy, all those who cannot afford to but software licence will eventually move to Open Source. By keeping them on Microsoft Pirated software, there is a huge likelihood that such students / professionals will use Microsoft Products in the long run and may start paying for it.

. .
If you cannot afford it, the solution is simple. Use Open Source Software.

Even though I can afford it, I still prefer using Open Source Software(not freeware or shareware).

Until hardware support is resolved Linux is far behind Windows..I can and will never switch to pesky Linux..From the point of view of % of users in the world its not highly competitive but for the lot who are unable to pay for a better Operating System. Still its good for a lower number of consumers if its keeping them happy for the time being but no match for a giant OS Windows.

That's not true. I find hardware support is much less painful on the latest Linux distros then Windows boxes. Most devices work out of the box. Ofcourse you have the exotic hardware which require you to install a vendor driver.. but do you want to do this?

Most of the kernel crashes aka Blue screen of death you see on Windows boxes happen because of these very same third party drivers. I prefer the Linux approach where most drivers are submitted upstream to the kernel and go through a proper vetting process. The best bit is that if you do have a kernel crash, just open up the sources, read the code, debug the problem, post a fix... in case you do not want to do it. Just post it upstream and people will jump on your issue and you will have a fix.

Personally, I have tried working on Windows 7 and Snow Leopard. Once you are over the shiny bits, you start missing the real things which matter(scripting support, automatic package installation/upgrade in my case) and I am back to Linux.

You should consider giving distros like Ubuntu a chance. You have live cds where you can play with the desktop by simply booting from a cd. You data and current OS on the disk is not touched when using this method.

Once you are confident enough, you could move to other distros like Fedora in case you want cutting edge desktop or CentOS in case you need to setup a rock solid server.

scrumpy...sorry but that is the reality linux can't take the big share of the reliable OS...
Wrong Windows 7/Apple OS are way ahead of linux please don't compare them with this midget Free distribution kit. These are heavy duty complex OS don't brush them off so easily don't deny it. As i said i will never give a chance for to ubuntu to run on my laptops and dekstop. I am not denying that linux-ubuntu or other of the kids are not satisfying but in larger picture they've long way down to challenge.
