NEW DELHI: India will procure over 300 Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets and Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) at a total cost of Rs 64,408 crore to strengthen the combat capability of the IAF, the government said today.

Replying to a question on procurement of combat aircraft in the Rajya Sabha, Defence Minister A K Antony said, "Su-30 MKI aircraft and Tejas LCA are the major modern combat aircraft that have been contracted for induction into the Indian Air Force."

"The total cost of procurement of Su-30 MKI is over Rs 55,717 crore while the cost of procurement of Tejas LCA is about Rs 8,691 crore," he added.

The Minister informed the House that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is already manufacturing the Su-30 MKI aircraft as well as Tejas LCA for the IAF.

"Further HAL would also eventually be manufacturing the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) and Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) planned for further induction into the IAF," he said.

Replying to a question on submarine fleet of the Navy, Antony said, "A programme for construction of six submarines is currently underway at Mazagaon Dock Limited. Acceptance of Necessity for acquisition of another six submarines has also been accorded by the Defence Acquisition Council."

To a query on upgradation of harbour protection system, Antony said, "Indian Navy has detailed security plan for its bases which is constantly reviewed in the light of threat perception."

Procurement and upgradation of naval assets including coastal anti-submarine vessel is an ongoing process depending upon threat perception and naval requirements, he said.

.
tejas for 8691 cr..this means more than 100 tejas for sure.

. .
^I guess for now 100+ tejas and remaining would be of mark2

only if the tejas cost 18 mill per piece - this cost is for the 40 tejas mk1 which have already been ordered

its 272 su 30mki and 40 LCA tejas - total 312 (the above mentioned over 300)

. .
I am little confused what are the exact orders for tejas and MKI and why are we buying more MKI when FGFA is going to come??

.
Man....we need these LCA MkIs asap to replace those flying coffins.Ane among these 272 Su 30MKIs, IAF should deploy atleast 160 to NE by 2015.And what about the Super 30 project??Are the upgrade pakages finalised or not??

.
There has to be some mistake
IAF already operates 159 Su30MKI out of the planned 270
also Remaining 111 MKIs will not cost Rs 55000 Crores , infact they should not cost more than Rs 30000 cr

India currently plans to Induct 40 Tejas MK1 (out of which 7 are currently in service ) , 83 Tejas MK2 and 46 Tejas N
These aircrafts will definitely cost more than 20000 cr not Rs 8500 cr which the article sugest

To me , it seams that India is planning to order another batch of 30-40 MKIs

OK....
Now i got it , so 272 MKIs which we will operate by 2017 will cost a cumulative 55000 crores which is quite acceptable and translate into 45 Million USD each
WHILE Rs 8600 cr is for 40 Tejas MK1 , which too seams acceptable

FGFA production is not going to start before 2017...and we have to retire mig-21 ..so we need more MKIs...

Well,272 MKIs are confirmed.Regarding the FGFA,it's not gonna come before 2018 and it will take time to make a meaningful force level of those stealth planes. So more Su 30MKIs are ordered to maintain a qualitative edge over our adversaries and to replace our flying coffins
REGARDS...............

In my opinion HAL should bukkle up so that we can replace those flying coffins by Tejas mk2.

Can anyone tell me the exact or how expensive the entire deal was for the 272 Su-30MKI's in dollar currency? Also, how many of these Su-30MKI's will be upgraded to Super Su-30? I know 40 will be placed with Brahmos Missiles.

Around 12 billion $...

Also, how many of these Su-30MKI's will be upgraded to Super Su-30?
There was an article a few days back. According to the article all the new Su30's will be Super Su30 and then the initial ones will also be upgraded. It looks like almost all of them...

IAF already operates 159 Su30MKI out of the planned 270
also Remaining 111 MKIs will not cost Rs 55000 Crores , infact they should not cost more than Rs 30000 cr
That money is for all 272 or 300+ (whatever is the exact number)...

To me , it seams that India is planning to order another batch of 30-40 MKIs
HAL said they are expecting order for another 40...

.
48LCA MK1 the rest being MK2 up to 180 MK2 LCA's will be manufactured and serve as part of the backbone of the IAF for the future
