London:

Price of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal built at a cost of £200 mn has dipped to a ridiculous level of £3.5 mn. (Reuters)

Cash-strapped Britain is putting an aircraft carrier, warships, helicopters as well as battle fortified Land Rovers on the market for a song.

Under an almost distress sale to plug a gaping 36 billion pound hole in the Ministry of Defence's budget, the price of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal built at a cost of 200 million pounds has dipped to a ridiculous level of 3.5 million on an eBay-style website.

Also on offer at almost throwaway prices are Type 22 frigates costing 400 million each at 300,000 pounds, destroyers at just a million pound, the Daily Mail reported quoting senior officials.

It's not only the naval weaponry that is up for grabs, but also the 13 gazelle helicopters which cost almost 5 million to build apiece are being sold at just 100,000 pounds.

For car lovers, the armoured version of the Jaguars are going for just 12,000 pounds cut from 200,000 pounds and snatch Land Rovers at just 2,000 pounds from their retail price of 65,000 Pounds.

The SAS smock combat jacket which costs 350 pounds each have been put on the market for just 35 pounds.

"The MoD is so desperate to balance the books that they are selling everything imaginable" a prominent lawmaker Patrick Mercer has said, likening the sail to "selling the family silver".

"These goods have cost us millions and now they are being sold for peanuts", he said terming the distress sale as "not write".

Senior military officers are said to be furious at the sell-offs, which they claim are giving away quality equipment while the forces need everything they can get.

Should we take the new carrier and retire the Viraat.???

What the heck man? is it joke or a true news? i mean how the heck can they sell such things at a low price, the are not in that done and out sorta condition, there economy is still going good . why would a country with a defence budget of more than india will sell these equipment in such a low price just to cover their budget? even if they would have thought of this they would have directly sold this to 3rd world countries at a much reasonable price, what was the need to put that on an auction website or online selling website like e-bay?

Another possibility would be these equipment would have turned into junk and wouldnot be of any use , so selling them in scrap would have been a reason to lower their prices

Land Rovers @ 2000 pounds.

I just trashed all my plans to buy a TATA Nano!

Well, I'm not sure , but would be better than INS Virrat. The hull would be new and many a subsystems which can not be changed with every refit. e.g propulsion.
We can adapt it with other systems of our choice, (if the present one on it found inadequate).

The best point is that- it can be in IN colour , before INS Virkamaditya joins the fleet.
We had good experience dealing with Britishers in past, especially IN e.g Leander Class frigates.
The details , technical and commercial, can be worked.

Dont get over excited because you not only have to pay basic amount but also you will be charged a big amount in customs. you know this is common in our part of the world that you have to sometimes pay custom which is more than the actual amount of the good, specially in case of vehicles . plus you will not be in situation to check out these vehicles before purchasing or at the time of purchase, utmost some pics will be available to you, but you can't judge the condition of those vehicles through pics

Last thing you want is you opening the bonnet and bingo its empty then you will be using maruti suzuki 800's engine in land rovers haha

Is this a joke or what ?? Sounds fake to me ....

Now since when did military-grade-hardware get auctioned off online ?

In India, an armored Scorpio, safari or even Ambassador is priced at around 50-60 lakhs. So in this case, even the price after of an armored Land Rover or Jaguar falls around 30-40 Lakhs, i'm up for it.

As an investor, its a risk worth taking. ;)

.
We already have one carrier,
We're ingeniously developing 2 more and getting another one from Russia.

So we'll already have 4 carriers, I don't think we need any more.

HMS Ark Royal is too light.

INS Vikramaditya-45,000 tons
IAC-1 is 40,000 tons.
IAC-2 will be 65,000 tons
IAC-3 who knows...

This one is a little heavier then Vikrant..

Indian Navy in the future is looking at heavier, bigger, longer, ACs.

Do i look like an idiot to spend 30-40 lakhs without a proper inspection?

In this matter, military doesn't directly involve in selling these military hardwares. They sell it to some third party, who after some retrofitting will sell it to potential customers. Though that escalates the price a bit.
