Finance Minister Saleem Mandviwalla said on Saturday around 1.5 million people have the national tax number (NTN) out of which only 0.9 million pay their taxes.

According to a private TV channel, the minister, while talking about terminating the requirement of NTN while purchasing a car, said this would not affect the tax collections negatively because people were issued NTN while purchasing a new car but they destroyed it afterwards.

He said the Finance Ministry was reviewing the flat rates of agricultural tube-wells and if they were approved, then the subsidies would be allocated promptly.

About the new budget, Mandviwalla said the federal budget for the upcoming financial year 2013-14 would be prepared by the new government not the caretaker set-up.

If the new national assembly and the elected government came into before the elections, then they would prepare and present the next budget; otherwise, the caretaker government would prepare it and the interim cabinet would give it a temporary ascent whilst its upholding and implementation would be subjected to the final approval of the elected parliament that would come into power after the elections.

provided first prices are artificially lowered , and then taxes added to that figure , and then gradual price hikes

Currently the prices must go down .. as they are unrealistically high

IMF and WB exec's reading this are pulling their hair's right now!
Actually they aren't. It means more time taken by Pakistan to pay back the loans, more interest. They just won't give new loans in big amount.

Well people asking govt. to enforce taxation policies are forgetting the point that the same politicians themselves don't pay taxes.

Leak out the risk of all the people who pay taxes in every region. Let people see who don't pay taxes. Especially the rich ones.

BTW out of 180 million, Just 0.9 million is damn bad figure.

I think it's a very ill informing news article. When talking about taxation you can't just write a half a page piece. So lets see here, the headline reads, only 900,000 people in Pakistan pay taxes.

Which implies, this is the total number of people out of 180 mil are paying taxes. Common sense dictates Otherwise. There's no way thats possible. Govt automatically takes taxes out of the salaries of employees who have federal and civil service jobs. A quick search showed me the police force in Punjab Pakistan is numbered at 170,000. Then there are the teachers, bankers, postal service, fire dept., doctors, nurses, lawyers, judges, public transportation, and so on and on.

Alone the civil service employee would stand at a conservative figure of five million, Punjab alone. Property owners taxes automatically get deducted from their bank accounts, too on their property. I know cuz i own some property in Pak. Then you have the other provinces. So how is that 0.9 million of total population paying taxes? The finance minister said something about 1.5 million people have tax IDs of which 0.9 are paying taxes, that's almost two third.

But then again this article isn't even about statistics of tax payers. But some car buying program and taxes required for it. And the writer confusing that with something else.
