On Weibo, Modi picks up 46,000 followers in 6 days
BEIJING: China's official media has lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to communicate with the local people over Weibo, regarded as China's Twitter.
By Sunday evening, Modi had 46,000 followers within six days of joining the Chinese social media, which is a rare feat by a foreign leader. Chinese media including the State-run English newspapers, China Daily and Global Times, have welcomed Modi's move while publishing reports about Modi's popularity on the web platform in China.

The reports indicate the government's approval of Modi's endeavour to communicate with ordinary Chinese people. India-China relations have mostly been driven by government relations and media reports, and there has been little direct communication between the people of the two countries. This is the first time that an Indian leader is directly talking to Chinese people.
"Modi has been welcomed by Chinese Net users with his first post," the Global Times, one of the organs of the Communist Party of China, said in a report headlined, 'Modi debuts on Weibo ahead of state visit to China'.
The Weibo communication may have a impact on students of the Tsinghua University in Beijing, whom he will address on May 15 and those at the prestigious Fudan University in Shanghai, where Modi's will inaugurate a center for Indian and Gandhian studies on May 16. He will also meet the Indian community in Shanghai on that day.
His first post, "Hello China! Looking forward to interacting with Chinese friends through Weibo," was forwarded or retweeted 4,700 times within the first hour of hitting the Internet on May 5.
"Modi scores big hit with micro blog in run-up to visit," read the headline in the state-run English language China Daily. The China Daily said Modi's account on the Sina Weibo, akin to Twitter and Facebook, "attracted thousands of Internet users".
Though Modi has been widely-welcomed by Weibo users, there is a miniscule minority which is raising the issue of Arunachal Pradesh, which is being claimed by China describing it as "South Tibet". But Indian officials think such posts are so small in number they are not something to be worried about.
The Weibo postings by Modi have also generated discussion on the situation in India including the status of women. "I suggest improving the social status of Indian women and protecting the safety of females! Or we foreign women will not dare travel to India," one user said.
