New Delhi: Oman has become the first country in West Asia to place an order for guns with India.

According to senior officials, “INSAS gun from the Ordnance Factor Board is currently undergoing trials for the Oman army.”

This is not the first time that Oman is planning to procure defence equipment from India. Infact, state-owned Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) is set to foray into global market with special focus on the Gulf region.

GSL has been working on various projects to provide offshore patrol vessels to the Indian Navy and Coast Guard and is also looking forward to provide fast interceptor boats to the ministry of home affair.

Sources in the government indicated that GSL has delivered to three tugboats to Oman. “The Sultanate of Oman has expressed its keenness to buy more boats from GSL, however, due to overflow of orders that has been put on hold for the time being.”

GSL had participated in the Doha exhibition last year and it received positive response, especially from countries like Bahrain and UAE. “The officials of the Oman have visited the Indian shipyard and were impressed by the level of expertise, and suggested improvements to the ship designs,” said officials.

GSL will be undergoing modernisation to give a boost to their ship construction capability.

Has the order been already placed ??

Antony is screwing Defense R&D by delaying local private firms entry. On other side, he is wasting same money on foreign imports.

Inside story is that, corrupt nexus between forces(Army,IAF), MoD and weapon companies agents(biggest lobby in Delhi) is taking a stop gap tactic of diverting funds from domestic to foreign R&D collaboration programmes under stupid reasons that Indian private players don't have experience.

All these foreign collaboration will end up with zero ToT as in past.

TATA is capable of maturing AWACS technology within just 2 years. But MoD will never allow them do it. That will KILL all RADAR as well as EW component imports from Israel.

Israel, Russia weapon companies are biggest funder of "keep Indian private players out" initiative in Delhi.

India will never learn. Same blunders being repeated since 60 years.

I don't think so buddy. India today is capable of basic defense equipment but not the most lethal ones. It would be wise to import for next 10 years at least and then get into complete indigenous products.

Look at LCA and Arjun, they are great products but they were started when we didn't have any experience at all. It took so much of money and R&D to get them this far. If they were started in 1995-2000 they would have been completed in much less money and time.

We still are just warming up with radars and missiles. We need the best, no matter where it comes from. Slowly we are moving from imported to joint ventures and then to indigenous products. It takes time.

Akash, Nag, Astra, Insas, LCH, Brahmos, Aircraft Carrier are great examples.

We started with importing Migs(Mig21, Mig29). Then started upgrading them in India(Mig21). Then started integrating them with Indian subsystems(Su-30). Then started co-developing(Pak-Fa). Soon we will be creating our own planes(LCA). Its a slow process so lets be patient.

We are doing great and in 2030 we will be creating all our goods here at home.

And if corruption is the problem, our private sector are no angels. They have great experience of corrupting the government.

That's a good joke.

So you are saying India did a mistake by starting LCA programme in 1989 and should have waited till 1995 because you think we could have completed it faster?

Do you think making 4th Generation fighter is a chocolate, which one can make in 15 years(1995-2010) from scratch?

Show me one country on earth which did this "from scratch" in 15 years.

So, whats next? We should wait till 2030 to start MCA? Sure, IAF will love if India diverted 20Billion$ to importing 200 F-18s than investing in MCA.

I must say, you are funny and know nothing about aviation R&D and how innovation processes evolve. Your thinking is like those in Army, IAF who are "good fighters", hard working, physically strong but intellectually null about scientific innovation. They are not Laboratory types and they think aircraft is like a washing machine which anyone can make.

Everyone knows how IAF refused big funds to HAL during 1960's and forced them to cut down Aircraft R&D projects. IAF has their excuses ready as always - "Indian scientists can't make it. Why waste time? Lets import, R&D hota rahega. That's not important right now. Focus on servicing Russian planes, we don't want you to waste money on aircraft R&D."

Another good joke.

Propulsion technology & seeker(brain) of Brahmos is "imported" from Russia and Russia has refused to share both the technologies.

They are Great examples of how "made in India" scam is running jointly by DRDO+Armed forces.

It seems you are from Indian army who puppets same lies in public to defend their short-sighted policies of diverting big funds to imports. This drama is going on since Russian imports era.

Indian Army and IAF are primarily responsible for pathetic condition of Indian defense R&D. Why to ask criminals who know nothing about R&D?

We started with importing Migs(Mig21, Mig29). Then started upgrading them in India(Mig21). Then started integrating them with Indian subsystems(Su-30). Then started co-developing(Pak-Fa). Soon we will be creating our own planes(LCA). Its a slow process so lets be patient.

And how many Mig-21 crashed even after upgrading in India? Did you forget how HAL failed to create even basic quality spare parts, main reason behind crashes?

The imports lobby(Corrupt MoD babus+ Short-sighted-IAF) would love to hide this obviously so HAL is not privatised and its contract is not transferred to M&M Aviation division or TATA.

Sure, you will love to keep TATA out of Indian defense R&D. That keeps pockets of Armed forces generals(appointed by political their favourite masters)+ babus in MoD warm.

I can tell you just one thing.

Allow TATA, M&M to fully take part in LCA-MKII, Kaveri engine, AWACS and every other big project and you don't need wait another 30 years. All these technologies are within reach of Indians. Only a right management and disciplined team approach is lacking. They can do it in just 10 years.

Indian brains are better than Jews. But they are only "apples" if they remain under HAL,DRDO or any other PSU. And, MoD+Army don't want them to move to private management because that will kill their import lobby-bribe nexus.

Stop being paranoid of private players. Look at USA, Israel.

India will end up importing for next 100 years if we kept sucking to wishes of Army+IAF+DRDO. Morons!

Jagjitnat,

why you forgot to include Arjun(MBT) in your successful list of DRDO's projects? Sour grapes?

Do I need to expose Indian Army here for their blunder on Arjun? I think you are sensible and will admit the facts than parroting old excuses to hide incompetency in Indian Army leadership's vision.

Also I tell you one more thing - Indian Army conducted a public survery on "Why Indian youths are not interested in joining Indian Army? We are running short on officers."

Guess what one major reply was? - "Why to join an army which runs on Imported weapons".

Do you know that TATA was behind Pinaka(MRBL)?

Multi-barrel rocket launcher(Pinaka) was used in Kargil war and Army appreciated its performance.

If TATA can make Pinaka, then making Bofors type gun from there is even easier.

Pinaka was ready in 2001 with upgraded version. Why TATA was kept out since 9 years from bigger advanced projectile/guns projects?

What prevented Army to ask TATA make Bofors upgrade for them?

Can you answer on this?

I am sure you have some excuses ready on this too, like "we should go slow on funding domestic R&D. Imports are faster. Lets spend big on imports. Lets import 10 more years please.(Repeat same line after 10 years)." - Short-sighted IAF,Indian Army

^can you give me a source of that survey? just wanted to know how many participated.

Dude! chill a little and think once.

Tata cannot manufacture Tejas or any aircraft at the moment. Even the Indica they manufacture was full of problem till a few years back. An aircraft stalling in combat won't be a nice scenario now, would it be?

As for starting in 1983, when LCA program was started they weren't aiming for 4++ gen aircraft, but a light aircraft to replace Mig-21. But delays after delays got the program so late that they had to refresh the program multiple times. Each time the program was near completion, the demands of IAF would increase. It is only after 1995 that the program has started to bear fruit.

I don't know why you are so fed up of the army, but according to me a commendable job is being done and I am very happy with the results.

Pop chill down and let us have a intelligent debate about this.U are talking of US and Israel, why not talk of Russia.Companies that we are so enamoured of like LM and boeing are the cause of them becoming too big to fail and is taking down the american economy with them.Even the pakistanis joke around and say ameica has no gas in their tank.Privatisation is not a panacea for all ills. These private sector companies have to be held in check or they will just suck the life out of our economy.Lets be calm and debate this.

TATA can manufacture Tejas if they are allowed to. But that will kill "imports lobby" which keeps IAF+babus pockets warm.

Army+MoD nexus never allowed TATA to go beyond Pinaka project in 2001 and refused to award them any new project. They were so scared with Pinaka's success that they were sure TATA is more capable than they initially thought.

Do you think DRDO would have succeeded in maturing Pinaka system without TATA, within given timeframe? Impossible.

As for starting in 1983, when LCA program was started they weren't aiming for 4++ gen aircraft, but a light aircraft to replace Mig-21. Wrong.

Idea of LCA came about in 1983. But project got first funding in 1989. IAF loves blamegame only. They lack maturity to work jointly with Indian scientists to complete work on time.

The fact is that IAF always hated LCA project and thought it was wasteful expenditure to even invest on 4th generation aircraft R&D domestically. The way you are twisting the dates of LCA programme shows how much you are aware about LCA project.

I don't know why you are so fed up of the army, but according to me a commendable job is being done and I am very happy with the results.

So, what is professional about Indian Army?

This "professional" Army leadership was sleeping and ignored warnings of intrusions in Kargil. And when they woke up, Pakistan army had already captured almost whole Kargil. This caused immense blood and losses which could have been avoided.

Recently Army chief's colleague was suspended for corruption. This was good example of Indian Army's professionalism.

So, first fix the rotten Indian Army first. That will improve other things.

Indian army leadership is as much bootlicker of politicians as our Police officers. They are as incompetent as those lax babus in MoD if not less. Also short-sighted for running behind every foreign toy, diverting funds from domestic R&D to foreign suppliers.

By the way, you didn't answer me on Indian Army's Arjun MBT blunder. No answer?

Ok, some more on Indian Army leadership's incompetency -

LiveFist - The Best of Indian Defence: "Arjun In Present Form Can Never Be Our MBT, 2 More Regiments Possible"

"The Army should share the blame also for not expediting its requirements for a future main battle tank (FMBT). There have been internal studies for years, but to this day, there is no definite picture of what our FMBT should have, look like or be capable of. So when the people at DRDO blame us for indecision and mid-stream QR changes, they do seem to have a case. As they did with Arjun." - Indian Army tankman(Arjun MBT Field trial team member)

Read his last words. Its not just about MBT. Army has tried to delay many other DRDO projects.
