Chidambaram made a good point. If the standard rate of GST is not capped at 18 percent then their is no need for a GST. The customs can alone do that job. But still congress demand of making the 18 percent cap a part of the bill is as stupid as it gets. That means that the govt will need to amend the Constitution every time they need to change the tax rates to more then 18 percent.

Simplified tax structure, payment of taxes at only one channel instead of paying different authorities for the same product at different points of time e.g. pay tax when importing raw materials/purchasing raw materials, tax after manufacturing, tax when crossing different states if you have to, pay taxes at time of sales etc.

No I dont think petroleum or tobacco are exempted.
