Odds stack up against India at UN vote

NEW DELHI: India's efforts to get a UN resolution on human rights violations by Sri Lanka off the table have only a slim chance of success. The US, which sponsored the resolution, is piling up the pressure on countries to support it. Diplomats in Geneva said they were looking at a vote around March 23.

The non-aligned countries, a sizeable group in the UN, have solidly opposed the resolution and backed Sri Lanka. India that often plays the role of a leader is a member of the group. The Asian countries within the grouping will stay with Sri Lanka.

But there are reports that the Latin American countries are veering towards the American point of view. African countries have been wavering, and are susceptible to Washington's pressure. They are more vulnerable to outside persuasion, diplomatic sources feel.

If they can withstand the US pressure, the resolution has a chance of being defeated. If not, India will be called upon to vote, and though it may abstain, it will open the UPA government to criticism and retribution from its Tamil allies.

India may not be serious in stopping the resolution. There is too much political pressure to at least abstain. The only reason for the overtures to SriLanka is to avoid getting SL into China's lap.

.
I think India will not vote against Sri Lanka, more likely they'll avoid voting because of pressure from TN politicians. Every country thinks their people first than thinking about other countries, normally Tamils are so sensitive so If India vote for SL it will make some matters for Indian government.

.
China, Russia for sure will vote against those crap resolution. So there is nothing to worry about that.

India resolution against human rights violation...:D
isn't it the same country who always favour israel on openly killing inocent palestinians?

leave aside the human rights violation in india itself

seems really funny.
its less human rights & more sympathy to the indian sponsored terrorists in srilanka.

seems like you know nothing, thousands got died due to this Tamil tiger terrorists groups suicide bombs and their activities, I do have a personal suicide truck bomb experience fortunately I didn't go to school that day but bomb able to shake my home in the morning. I have to fill forms telling how many strangers at my home every month those days :(, have to attended security meetings :( have to avoid public transport locations, more check points :( when a bomb blasts dozens of calls asking "where are ya?" are you okay etc etc.................now those things has gone to history and enjoying a life in Sri Lanka!

But sometimes come to mind if India did not train that Tamil tiger terrorist group in their soil we won't face this much troubles. Lives we lost are all Sri Lankans, Hope India won't train another terrorist group against any country in our region. :)

. .
anyone who has seen the channel 4 video and if he is human will support the resolution, others are equal to:sick:,,,,,,,,,,,,, india must choose what it stands for "truth and justice" or foreign relations................if indhra gandhi had been the pm the situation wud have been way different, she wud have kicked some sinhalese a**.

.
Though i am not a tamil,i fully support them, this useless congress government cant do anything, let them vote against sanctions this will act as a catalyst against there demise,we can deal with srilanka when congress is out of picture.

.
if u treated tamilans as u r citizen will this happen ,there wont be Refugees in India ,there wont be LTTE ..

Thatz a good point, I love to talk about this. Sri Lanka has many ethnics, but some Indian members here think this is an issue between Sinhalese and Tamils, lol it's not exactly true. In SL there are 3 Tamil groups, each group has differences. Indian members who have visited Sri Lanka may be know about this. One Tamil party playing a game to gain votes by spreading racism even though current president's party UPFA able to secure around 37% of Tamil votes while 2 other Tamil parties share the rest in north. Tamil party who won the eastern province supporting current government. 3rd Tamil group we called them Indian Tamils/up country Tamils they are always supporting current President. You have to come here to experience this.

I sometimes think how many PDF members have visited Sri Lanka recently, most of them are lack of knowledge about Sri Lanka. Just give a visit to whole country, you'll get answers to all your doubts. ;)

mate just read it....
http://www.defence.pk/forums/world-...-final-phase-sri-lankas-civil-war-report.html

Ur own govt have accepted 8000k people have been killled at the initial stages of war... more were killed at final stages..
So who is responsible for those killings?

.
I like tibetian type of protest ..there should be zero tolerance on the policy of bombing public places ..
There is something called "karma" so dont be so apologetic on the plight of those who supported bombing policy
Having said that "karma" is equally applicable to srilankan govt .. Buddism being major religion in srilanka it is shame that they are facing these kind of situation as a country ..

India is in a very unique and precarious position wherin it must stay true to its democratic and fair values but risk alienating not only its own citizens but a nation on its doorstep already swaying perilously close to a rival.
