BEIJING: US President Barack Obama's unprecedented second visit to India is a "superficial rapprochement" given their hard differences on issues like climate change and nuclear energy cooperation, a wary China said on Sunday as it kept a close watch on the outcome of talks.

Obama's arrival in New Delhi was sort of breaking news on state-run CCTV which showed live feed of him being received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the airport with questions on how it is going to impact China and whether it was part of US strategy of containment of Beijing's growing influence in the region.

State-run Xinhua news agency in a commentary, said, "The shortened three-day visit is more symbolic than pragmatic, given the long-standing division between the two giants, which may be as huge as the distance between them."

"After all, only one year ago, US diplomats were expelled from New Delhi amid widespread public outrage over the treatment of an Indian diplomat in New York and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was then chief minister of Gujarat, was still banned from entering the United States," it said.

"But that is not all to that. What lies under the superficial rapprochement is nothing short of a deal," it said.

It said that Obama's 'Pivot to Asia' policy has been "distracted or even derailed" by the undying conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

"He needs this trip to tell the Capitol Hill and his supporters that his administration can make progress on important relations. More frankly, he needs India to side with him," it said.

The commentary said that for India, a closer relationship with the US is compatible with its multi-faceted diplomacy and could be commercially beneficial.

"Three days are surely not enough for Obama and Modi to become true friends, given their hard differences on issues like climate change, agricultural disputes and nuclear energy cooperation," it said.

"Concerning nuclear energy cooperation, Washington and New Delhi have long been engaged in a complicated dance since 2008...With such a long list of differences on the table, Obama will face a hard job to have his Indian friends on the same page," Xinhua said.

Yea, definitely panic in China over POTUS's visit and the fact that he'd be the Chief Guest on such a big day in India. There is a clear strategic message for the world with this. There is nothing "symbolic" about it. Its all strategic. I just hope the promises made and commitments agreed are honored by both sides and this relationship becomes a real strategic partnership.

You can say we are in a camp after todays speech and establishing the Hotline between New Delhi and Washington.
:D
Whatever it is, i am sure our interests are always taken care of by this government.

Wrong.

India has always been an Anglo-Saxon colony. This just reinforces that long held view.

Had China being on Indias place and India on Chinas. China would have done the same.. as a matter of fact , any sensible and mature country will do what India did. Do you agree?
Modi means business , if you can provide India more business , and help accelerate the growth rate bringing more people out of poverty and give help them a decent life , Modi will sign deals with you.
Please understand this , the only thing it reinforces is Modi is pro India , not pro US or anti China :)

off topic : Wudnt it be a great day when noone will die of hungar?

It's important to have strong US India strategic friendship. US have a lot to offer to India such as defense technology, manufacturing tech, electronics, etc. what can India offer US except bases for US military. India won't even open up its market to the US. Even Walmart is not able to open up a store in India. India need to open up its market first.

And the agreement on agriculture during Modi's visit to us,the article is for chinese peopel to fool them as always.

The article is more of directed for India at large. They did that when Abe visited and vice versa.

Yeah , I agree that US can offer India few gadgets... but behold ... they wont be high tech gadgets.. will they be now @greyboy , a.k.a. Luca?
and on teh point of "what can India offer US... only bases?" now @greyboy that really chuckled me.. US knows it very well that only India (given the size) can help US `contain` China (which we will never do , remember my previous statement , Modi is Pro India and not anti-China).. US also knows India and China have border disputes..and US wants to use this stiffness on the border in its favour.
But I can assure you , India will not allow US to build its bases in India.
We will have our cakes and EAT THEM TOO !! Just watch .
