Nust gets that spot because it is the only university with all major faculties like science, business, medicine, engineering etc. Otherwise the best Pakistani business schools are LUMS and IBA, the best medical school is Aga Khan University Karachi, but NUST is probably the best engineering school.

Pakistan desperately needs atleast one state of the art university in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) area. Currently there is no cutting edge STEM university in Pakistan that can match India's IITs which has massive effect on their technology culture. NUST may be the best in Pakistan but its actually nothing on international stage. That is a whole different level.
