Countries with massive nuclear arsenals are wasting their money because the kickback of just 100 missiles would be enough to kill their own citizens.
The vast majority of the world’s 15,000 nuclear warheads are held by the US and Russia -but a new study has estimated no nation could fire more than 100 without unleashing catastrophic events that would hit home.
The findings – published in the journal Safety – follows the Singapore summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un where both leaders vowed to denuclearise the Korean peninsula.
Scientists from Michigan Technological University and Tennessee State University examined the “environmental blow-back” of a one-way nuclear attack.
They found the huge amount of soot and dust thrown into the air over would blot the sun and damage the atmosphere.
A destructive “nuclear autumn” would follow causing farming output to drop by 20percent – enough to cause food shortages even on the other side of the world.
Professor Joshua Pearce, one of the authors, said modelling revealed if the US were to fire 1,000 nukes, 50-times more Americans would perish than during the 9/11 attacks, even if no missiles were fired back.
“With 100 nuclear weapons, you still get nuclear deterrence, but avoid the probable blowback from nuclear autumn that kills your own people," he said.
There are nine nuclear-armed countries: the US, Russia, the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea.
