The NSG will soon deploy two advanced US-made vehicles to counter any threat of chemical and biological weapons to the national capital, including the high-security Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.

The giant vehicle, called the Total Containment Vehicle (TCV), will be able to safely defuse dangerous and contagious bombs weighing upto eight kilograms.

Home Minister P Chidambaram today announced a sanction of Rs 34.89 crore to the National Security Guard (NSG) for procuring the TCVs.

According to sources, the ‘black cat’ commando force will procure a total of eight such vehicles, out of which one will be kept with the NSG counter-hijack crack unit at the IGI airport while the other will be deployed with the bomb data centre here to rush it to any spot in the national capital.

While four TCVs will be deployed at the four new NSG hubs in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata, the remaining two will be handed to CRPF.

NSG chief RK Medhekar, during his interaction with reporters earlier this month, had said that the new TCV is one of the “best” which can be operated remotely and can take on repeat-explosions.

The TCV first displayed its fine capabilities during the 2008 terror attacks in Delhi when one of the smaller versions of this vehicle defused two bombs at the Central Park in Connaught Place.

“In 2008, the TCV did a good job. But the smaller device used to develop cracks after few explosions. Hence an advanced version of the US made vehicle is being procured by the force now,” a senior NSG officer said.
