NEW DELHI: In the steepest ever hike, petrol price was increased today by Rs 7.50 a litre with effect from midnight tonight. State-owned oil firms said they will raise petrol price by Rs 6.28 per litre excluding local sales tax or VAT. The hike translates into Rs 7.50 per litre in Delhi. Petrol in Delhi currently costs Rs 65.64 a litre and after the increase it will be priced at Rs 73.14 per litre.

Earlier in the day, the Left parties had opposed any such move saying it will be a cruel blow to the people reeling under price rise.

With rupee depreciation leading to jump in oil import bill, petroleum minister S Jaipal Reddy on Tuesday said there is an immediate need to raise fuel prices, but refused to say when the hike will actually take place. "It (price increase) is very essential but (before hiking rates) we have to talk to political parties," he told reporters.

The government had decontrolled petrol price in June 2010 but rates were last increased on November 4 last year. This despite oil price rising by 14 per cent and 7 per cent fall in value of rupee against the US dollar. Price of diesel, kerosene and cooking gas were raised in June last year.

"If rupee depreciates by one against the US dollar, our oil companies lose Rs 8,000 crore (annually)," Reddy said.

Given costs of up to 1.70 Euro (and more) per liter of unleaded fuel – the equivalent of $8.56 per gallon – it should come as no surprise that Germany's drivers have become bargain hunters. (One gallon is equal to 3.78 liters).

World News - Crazy gas prices driving German consumers mad

If at all this price hike is going to help India manage fiscal deficit...In other words this move is going to have a positive influence on our growth...either you made a mistake in mixing it up with bad factors or you are pretty naive about economics.

We pay much more in Germany. Right now between € 1.63 - 1.70 per liter. :(

But you earn fifteen times of them.. ...

Really do not know why China has 8 times of India in industry output , 8 times of India in auto sales...And our petrol Consumption times of India's...but they still has a petrol price much higher than us...

I feel it is not bad to increase the prices of pertol, if you look people have become careless about use of pertol. We waste a lot of petrol while we criticize government to let go their taxes that is needed for development, we make zero effort to reduce our spending. The only thing is that for poor and middle class people we can give them some portion of petrol on controlled prices.

I think time has come where we should give everyone a petrol card where you are allowed some basic amount of petrol on cheap prices. That way necessity can be cheap but luxury is taxed. Right now out of major portion of sale 25% is necessity and 75% is luxury and to avoid impact on necessity we are also not taxing luxury.

Marc Faber: Chinese Government Statistics Are Fake | ValueWalk

Chinese government statistics are fake for the most part and if Chinese economy is slowing down there will be more money printing in China. the Chinese government economic figures are meaningless, because they are manipulating most of the economic data, which confirms that there is no economic growth in China this year in fact China’s production of steel, cement and electricity as well as the volume of its exports and car sales are stable or declining compared to last year, which is incompatible with the growth announced by the government he explained

Guys how can you enjoy these hikes? Anyway we in UK are "enjoying" £1.34 per ltr
