TOKYO, January 9. /TASS/. North Korea has requested Russia to provide it with Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets, South Korea’s JoongAng Ilbo daily has reported citing a military source.

The particular proposal was made during the November visit to Russia of Choe Ryong Hae, a top Communist Party official and close ally to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“Choe Ryong-hae, who visited Moscow as a special envoy of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in November last year, asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to provide Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets,” the report said, citing the source.

North Korea is capable of producing many weapons systems domestically, “but it appears to have sought Russia’s help because building fighter jets requires more complex technologies,” the report said.

“But because of international sanctions imposed on the North, Russia won’t likely sell it readily,” it said.

Choe, a member of the Politburo Presidium and Secretariat of the Workers’ Party of Korea, paid a seven-day visit to Russia. He met with President Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and handed over to the Russian leader a personal message from Kim Jong Un.

If only they had money, seriously a country with GDP just a little than 40 billion US dollar, bought a sophisticated fighter such as Su-35 will be a daunting task. They should ask investment in infrastructure, agriculture and commercial trade opportunities instead of Fighter Jets

Russia may not want to sell Su-35s their top of the line jet, but they can offer Mig-35s even Migs will be big boost to NK air capabilities if delivered, Su-35 can change the balance of air power and make it even play ground which west and specially US will not like, Migs may increase capabilities allowing NK to hold and defend air space against SK but will not allow air dominance against them which Su-35 can provide, so Russia may not like to annoy west more just for NK.

.
The further arming of North Korea destabilizes the entire region. I hope the Russian partners pursue a policy that will show to the region and world of Russia's interest in securing the regional stability of Northeast Asia, and not the anti-thesis.

NK is not as advance as it neighbors are, so why you worry, they have Nukes for strategic defense but conventionally they are very weak as per 21st century warfare standards.

How one earth are they paying for this, as far as I remember they don't have sufficient funds to buy these considering their economy is little to non existent in the international market.

Even their nukes are not strong, NATGEO had a show where they compared the blast radius of their nukes, and it would not even be able to level NY city, plus they have yet to miniaturize them and create a proper delivery system.

although their equipment is sooo cold war era, they made up their weakness in Quantity especially their Ground Forces equipment

Basically they don't have to level a city like NY with nukes, they only have capability to kill few hundred thousand that is enough to inflict fear in enemies and that is their strategic asset / deterrent.

In today's warfare air power is key and SK is very strong with good NCW capability they will detect and destroy artillery & moving armor of NK which will not have CAS/CAP. In 21st century number can't assure you victory if oponent is a well trained and equipped force having quality edge, even in less number that force can take out large force with old tech and equipment.

They bought 35 Mig-29B from Russia decades ago. The induction of a squadron of Su-35 will not make much difference as both South Korea and Japan have powerful airforces and will induct F-35.

The difference between Su 35 and MIG29 is the range and speed

Su 35 - 3,600 km where as MIG29-1,430 km

North Korea should focus on food , water, basic amenities that its citizens require. Not weapons.

.
If North Korea's socioeconomic situation can be symbolized by Maslow's hierarchy of needs, then they have a heck of a long way to go before they have the resources to begin servicing these jets, let alone deploy them. Their government needs to first invest in their people, the bread and butter behind any nation's economy and stability.
