No mercy for violating kite flying ban: Punjab CM

LAHORE: The provincial government will not allow kite-flying at any cost, and people violating the ban would not be spared if human lives are lost due to kite-flying anywhere in Punjab, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Monday.

According to a government handout, Shahbaz directed a high-level meeting of senior police and administration officials to ensure that the kite-flying ban in the province is strictly implemented and a vigorous crackdown carried out against the people involved in manufacturing kites and kite-string.

A good decision taken by the court. The ban is imposed because the chemicals mixed with glass and metal string used for flying kites have killed hunderds of people spcially childern.

Despite warnings the sale of such strings have not been stopped by greedy traders hence the ban came for the last two or so years.

I remember kite flying as a youth in Pakistan, with cousins and street kids.

Building our own kits, modifying them - crushing light bulbs and sticking the jagged glass onto the string so as to ensure that the opponents kite-string would tear and not ours (whilst kite fighting).

Ah, the good old days,

I hope we didn't kill anyone (seriously).

We in Punjab especially in Lahore Gujranwala Sialkot area people loves kite flying and crazy about it. However, in last couple of years the professional kite flyers are using strings which do not brake and if stuck in some one throat can slit it. This has caused many deaths in the past. Government tried to regulated the strings and restricted kite flying to one day even then last year many people died. Therefore, from this year it was decided to have complete ban on the festival. It sucks but what more sucks is a four year kid with a slit throat

Why can't they just use different string?

Hope I am right. In Punjab, specially in Lahore, people don't and can't tolerate any thing sort of defeat even in kite flying. It was just like a war between people around the neigbourhood and doing it chivalrously like Knights while the ladies watching. ;)

It would have been a shame for a person to have his kite go "Bao-Kata" and to make sure that the thread don't cut, they use glass and other chemicals on the thread (Doar) and causing deaths of several people including children and grown-up by their throats being cut.

I hope you'll now understand why they don't use ordinary thread.

Its actually the opposite. Punjabis, in particular Lahoris are mad about kite flying. So much so that once every spring there is a kite festival called Basant, in which the entire City of Lahore (quite literally, google for pictures) flies kites. The nylon string used to fly the kites is laced with powdered glass, hence there are city wide competitions of kite-dog fights where everyone maneuvers their kites to cut each other's strings. Its a very skilled sport.

Its dangerous too. Dozens die each year since the kites that are cut, have a piece of the string hanging by and can end up slitting throats. People on motorbikes sometimes fly right into a rouge piece of string and have been known to be decapitated, children fall off roofs, some people tie a string of metal wire (metal wire cant get cut and they goal is to use it to pull each other's kites in - in the sport of things its considered not as bad) and that metal wire sometimes hits overhead electric cables, electrocuting people and also cause power outage. Oh and Chemical strings. Some strings are laced with chemicals that burn the other person's strings down - these chemicals are potentially very dangerous.

But still - Basant is basant. People need to be careful. Its a traditional thing, the government needs to provide designated facilities (large grounds perhaps) for it.

Nothing like cutting someone's kite and shouting "Bo Kataaa!!!"

WOW. Here in Kolkata we scream the same thing, well almost the same thing. 'Vooooooooooo kaaaaaaaata'.

This is practically customary. No victory over your opponent is complete unless it is followed by that Tarzan's howl. :P

But seriously, kite duels are not that deadly in this part of the world. Although there are incidents of falling off one's roof, slit throat due to 'weaponised' :-)P) strings is almost never heard of.

i used to live in okra, and we would fly kite's all night long, and it would be a battle against us and the guys in front of our house, they were always better than us at kite flying though. It was good at night, using white kites.

Really dangerous also, out of no where you would feel some ones strings slide by you, even cut you sometimes.

The ordinance was not violative of any fundamental right, but it aimed at protecting lives and property of citizens, a basic duty of the government, during the period of 2006-09 at least 18 people were killed and 24 others injured due to kite flying. Wapda faced a loss of Rs5 billion, while damage to its grid stations was Rs57 million. the court had also ordered provincial governments to ensure protection of life and property of citizens, but they instead of taking such steps, banned kite flying and making of related material despite the fact that livelihood of thousands of people was linked with this business.

As I said, Lahoris take the sport to whole new level on Basant day.

Lahore is a big city, and I say this quite literally that almost every citizen is busy flying kites that day.

It starts at night, every household gets floodlights and beams it into the sky and everyone uses white kites for the night time, there's a lot of partying, Dhol, Haleem and Kashmiri Chai. Then in the day Basant kicks into high gear with at least twice as many kites, somepeople get fancy kites, some people get Big kites, the ladies dress in Yellow. Its a fun day for most.

With that said, we have organized our own little Basant in Dubai! It's almost the same amount of fun.

How can Basant be scheduled in advance to be a day with good wind? Or is it windy every day in Lahore around the time of Basant? Does the amount of wind affect the danger? I would think if the wind is light, then the strings wouldn't be as taut and able to slice so much. Anyway, here in Virginia we would schedule a kite flying event for early march, but one could not be sure that on the day that was picked the wind would be good. This love of combative kite flying is depicted in the the novel "The Kite Runner", by Khaled Hosseini set in Kabul.

can't believe, I used to prepare high grade doar (string), always used good amount of kach (powdered glass), except cuts on fingers, no other damage.

Many die chasing kite here too, but there is risk involved in everything, why BAN ? Cricket is not safe also !

Amritsar is also famous for 'Patang or Gudda' shaunk.

Bachpan yaad karva dita, Have you guys played banteh (glass ball) ? Punjabi rural games are awesome, but not in fashion except a few which still survive, thanks to video games/ TV. :undecided:
