With Alpha jets, Nigeria will not have K-8s on the priority list

Nigeria has signed a memorandum of understanding covering the sale of the joint Pakistani-Chinese PAC/CAC JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter and a contract is expected to be finalised by November, a senior official from the Pakistan's Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) told IHS Jane's during the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) show held in South Africa from 14-18 September.

The official declined to say how many JF-17s Nigeria would order, but said the announcement was expected during the IDEAS show that will be held in Karachi in November.

He also declined to confirm that Nigeria will be the first export operator of the JF-17 as Myanmar has ordered the aircraft from China.

Nigeria's intention to acquire the fighter was revealed in the federal budget document that was released in January, which included NGN5 billion (USD25 million) for three JF-17s as well NGN2.06 billion for 10 PAC Super Mushshak basic trainers.

The DEPO official said that discussions were still continuing with both the Nigerian Air Force and the army's new aviation wing regarding the acquisition of the Super Mushshak trainers.

Nigeria waiting for US to approve Super Tucano sale
Jeremy Binnie, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
07 June 2016

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is hoping to replace its Dassault-Dornier Alpha Jets with Embraer EMB 314/A-29 Super Tucano turboprops, NAF spokesman Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa said on 6 June.

The NAF released this photo of the Alpha Jet NAF475 in February when it announced that the two aircraft that arrived from the US in 2015 had been remilitarised. It announced in March that the same aircraft had veered into a ditch when landing at Yola. (Nigerian Air Force)

The revelation came in a statement announcing that the apron at Yola Air Base was being expanded in preparation for the arrival of new platforms that have been ordered for the NAF, which include Mil Mi-35M helicopters, CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder fighters, and PAC Super Mushshak trainers.

"There are also strong indications that the US government may give the nod sooner than expected with regards to the sale of Super Tucano to the NAF to replace the ageing Alpha Jets," the statement said.

If the Nigerians are lucky the indians will offer them their Raphaels or Su30s in order to not go through with the sale

The Jf17 could bankrupt india

Good economy can let u buy the stuff of ur choice

i don't understand why nigeria would go for the JF-17 if there fight is with boko haram then attack choppers would be a better option, buying fighter jets is way too expensive.

Always a great prospect to entertain the delegates from Nigerian state. The concluded deal announcement no doubtingly give a tremendous boost to the overall aim for the JF17 Thunder project. However why wait till the Airshow? When you can be done concluding the deal ?

I imagined the Nigerians also are looking ahead , far ahead of mere anti terrorism Operations. They are sitting above oil wells and for their nation to be in turmoil is rather confusing, considering the great levels achieved in middle east.

JF-17 is to upgrade Nigerian air defence capabilities, its main purpose is not to fight boko haram. Sure it can drop PGM on rebels but most importantly to defend its air space.
