New York Times: Squeezed by an India-China Standoff, Bhutan Holds Its Breath

. . .
A voice from Bhutanese:

"Its impossible for me to fathom why our leaders are so willing to serve the interests of New Delhi even at the cost of our national interests. The memories of 2013 are still fresh in Bhutanese minds. The Great JYT in his farsightedness thought that having relation with China would be in the national interest of Bhutan. But some of his power hungry opponents aided by some treacherous media people made an issue out of his efforts to develop relation with China, and so with India's blessings stopped him from becoming the PM for the second term.

Many of us knew that things were not turning out well for Bhutan since then. Bhutanese hopes that Bhutan gradually freeeing from the clutches of New Delhi with the coming of democracy were dashed. The present government seems to be gladly willing to dance to the tunes of Indian government. AIIB is a good example. When all south asian nations joined the Chinese led AIIB, Bhutan did not join.
I guess Thimphu did not get green light from New Delhi.

Another example is the OBOR which was also led by the Chinese. Bhutan too missed the OBOR train. I guess that is also because Thimphu did not get New Delhi permit. Now how long is Bhutan going to please Indian politicians even when it is detrimental to our national interests.

Of late the Bhutan-China-India border dispute has become a national dilemma. India says that they are on the disputed area (between Bhutan and China) at the invitation of Bhutan. I think our government owe an explanation to the Bhutanese people. Were the Indians really asked by the Bhutanese government to defend the disputed area? If so, its as good as surrendering our sovereignty to India.
Wake up, national leaders of Bhutan.

Many of us knew all too well that JYT was right when he said "Bhutanese people may not understand what JYT tried to do for Bhutan, but someday they will and by then it will be too late". Perhaps his words will come haunt those in that serve the interest of New Delhi. For a concerned citizen like my self, I wished JYT was at the helm of governance because a leader of his calibre cannot be coerced or forced to act against the interest of Bhutan. For Bhutan and Bhutanese people, Pelden Drukpa Lha Gyalo!"

Republicans are usually good for India. Its the Democrats who usually screw us over.

Friendship with a country trying to kill your citizens - no thanks
You must mean INDIA.
Indians are killing their citizens in Kashmir and the North East.
Indians are killing their citizens for their cows.

NYT is considered anti Chinese.
Therefore it is remarkable that it highlights the bullying of Bhutan by India in this dispute.
NYT has brought attention to the western world how India is behaving towards Bhutan similarly to what it did to Sikkim before India violently intervened in Sikkim and annexed it.
The actions of India has made Bhutan increasingly resentful of India and anxious that it may meet the fate of Sikkim.
Bhutanese reject more interactions with the hateful Indians and had blocked the passage of BBIN MVA.
(Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal Motor Vehicles Agreement)

Bhutan's upper house blocks BBIN MVA pact: Is it a strategic setback for India?
" However, this time around, Bhutan seems to be resolved to assert itself wherever it feels its interests are sacrificed. "

LMAO, you think China will go easy on India after DongLan? Chinese attitude has already changed, we're not see India as we seen before, probably that what US and Japan want to see: China will have to put less force against them and more force against India and India can shoulder more of their burden. Congratulation to India, you guys have achieve the objects, we shall properly take care of you...since you're asking for.

You can bring on your confrontational attitude and see who will lose more, we can go tilt for tat on border infrastructure or arm race, we can move equivalent or more destructive power to keep constant pressure on your boundaries if that's what you want. Any generosity of the pass such as free water will be over, it will be element of bargain on the table, India will have offer valuable thing in return to get the water.

Today India dare to defy China because your government think that we're so busy in SCS, US, Japan and we can't afford to confront India so you have the freedom of action at our border, and if China does thing that not please India, you can tilt to US and make matter worst for China, this kind of blackmail is over. Chinese experts and strategists have notified Indian bargain tactic so why not play India's game instead, if we decide to pays maximum effort to counter India while relaxing our tension with US and Japan then we can corner and blackmail India back to get what we want...we're 5 time of Indian economy and 3 time of Indian defense budge...we can afford for Arm race and geo-political competition for influence, make Indian adversary or even enemy.
Looks like you want to make an USSR out of the Indian Union!!!! And, Pak is there too to beef it up!!!!

carrying water for a country that ran the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution

The Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution happened to be two of the most important reasons that China is what India can never be.

The Great Leap Forward laid the foundation for modern industries in China, and the Cultural Revolution eliminated the superstition from Chinese society.

India may have opened the Pandora's Box in its region of influence with its intrusion of Donglang area in Bhutan's name. Lots of Bhutanese are pissed, and they do not have much nice thing to say about India.

Yet, many of our Indian friends are still in the mood of celebrating "exchanging sweets with Chinese", thinking India has the upper hand because Chinese has not fired the shot yet. They redefined the word "stupidity". :partay:
