New York City Goes an Entire Weekend With No Shootings for the First Time in Decades

New York City went a whole weekend without any shootings for the first time in decades, the New York Police Department said Monday.

“The past weekend #NYC had no shootings, a milestone we haven’t reached in over a decade,” NYPD chief of patrol Rodney Harrison said in a tweet Monday.

The last weekend New York City went without any shootings was in 1993, the New York Daily News reports, citing NYPD records.

The streak of no shootings over the weekend began last Thursday, following a shooting in Brooklyn and carried through until Monday, when a person was shot in the Bronx, according to the Daily News.

Mayor Bill de Blasio commended the NYPD for the lack of shootings while speaking at the department’s graduation ceremony Monday.

“A city of 8.6 million people, not a single shooting for three days,” he said. He called it an “extraordinary” achievement and credited the NYPD for the streak.

As of Oct. 7, have been 600 shootings across the city in 2018 so far, according to the NYPD. That’s about a 2% drop from the same time period in 2017.

New York City is a unique American City. It is a bubble onto itself. As a life long resident, the New Yorker attitude of minding your own business really helps. The Police employ a strategy of "neighborhood policing", walking the most dangerous neighborhoods on foot at all hours of the day or night leaves little space for criminals to operate openly. connections with locals, and a large enough budget to have 34,000 uniformed police on the streets out of 51,000 employees (smaller logistics, more out on the street) means the police can focus in on their neighborhood's problems.

Every year the West Indian parade always has a shooting, so that is an event you can watch to see how the police try their best to manage the situation while letting the 99.999% of people enjoy their celebration peacefully.

Also the Police avoid harnessing beyond a limit. Stop and Frisk was a policy that intimidated mostly young men of color, but gave the police the means to keep the pressure on. The police has hired from more minority groups that don't have a history of going overboard to pissing off regular people; Bengali, Pakistani, Indian, Chinese, African, African American, Hispanic.

Also the economy of the city is good,and can fund social programs to pacify potential troublemakers. But when the Trouble makers do act up, the Police takes them in. Its a fine line, But the NYPD has done a great Job.
