DRDO has designed and developed a large number of products/systems for Defence Forces. Many of the products, originally developed for Defence Forces, can also be used by CAPF’s and State Police Forces in addition to other agencies, like NDRF. DRDO has organised visits of CAPF’s to various laboratories/establishments to show case DRDO’s products and capabilities. MHA has shortlisted about 146 items for trials, out of which trials of 78 products have already been completed. Large number of products which can provide protection, day/night situational awareness and support/mobility have been identified for induction in to Services (MHA) after trials.

It is really a fashion in ambitious third world countries to paint imported stuff in their colours and show off to the world as their own. I wonder how much of bulleted list is even partially indigenous development but still I applaud the confidence and spirit to develop and dream big.

admirable but what happened to drdo's hack-proof crash-proof operating system[1] :
Updated: October 10, 2010 01:27 IST

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on creating a futuristic computing system, including India's own operating system, said V.K. Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and DRDO Director-General.
Two software engineering centres are being set up for this purpose in Bangalore and New Delhi. “To start with, we will have 25 scientists at each of these centres. We are in touch with institutes such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the Centre for Development of Telematics, besides universities and industries. We will use available talent.” Citing security reasons, he refused to provide details of organisations involved in the project.

two years later[2] :
PTI Dec 20, 2012, 04.31PM IST

HYDERABAD: Exhorting the need to have a robust cyber security system in place, DRDO chief V K Saraswat today said the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) alongwith other premier institutes is developing India's own operating system (OS), which is likely to be ready in next three years.
Speaking to newsmen on sidelines of NAVCOM-2012', two-day international conference on Navigation and Communication that began here, Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister, said, "We have already started a major programme and are one-and-half-years into that programme. It (Indian OS) is a major effort requiring large number of software engineers working together."
He said 150 engineers were working across the country on creating Indian OS, and added it will take at least three more years for getting the Indian OS ready.

"It is our Indian effort...we are not having any foreign involvement in this," Saraswat pointed out.

slightly more than a year later[3] :
Last Updated: 08th February 2014 12:05 PM
He added that the DRDO had recently launched a programme to secure defence communication through local area and controlled networks. “We are working on secure mobile systems and developing our own processors for total control. We have our own routers and operating systems,” he said.
so, has drdo finally been able to design and write its operating system with participation of those 150 engineers working in various institutes across the country??

what is the os' name?? what architecture is it ( monolithic, microkernel, hybrid )?? what platform does it run on??

@jamahir there was a report on that opretaing system a few months back on the forum.. i think it was called BOSS... i wouldnt call it a "new" operating system though, there were reports that it was just another flavor of UNIX

boss is a cdac project ( not of drdo ) and is part of their open source programme, and you are generally right - boss is linux with a few modifications like options for indian language menus and things like that.

boss is quite old actually and nothing that can't be accomplished by a small team that had a six-month crash course in linux recompilation/modification... i myself use slax linux which was mainly developed by a dutch man i think and from the screen shots i saw of boss ( old and new ) i find slax to be more advanced than boss, though both are linux'es of course so there's not much of a race there.

actual new operating systems are rare, especially general purpose ones that are fault-tolerant, predictably responsive at all times ( the so-called real time ) and modular - like qnx.

and qnx 1.0 was originally written by two canadian men in the early 80's and they then opened a company with help of the savings of the wife of one of them... at the moment qnx's latest version is 6.something and is quite the best os generally, unless i am missing some russian os in the elbrus programme.

drdo doesn't require 150 engineers, many phd's and millions to write a best os... it simply requires good minds and one room, a simple pc, a drawing board and chairs... the wrong approach of drdo is also the reason why india hasn't contributed technologically to the world in 68 years, preferring to just use things and of course complicate things.

also, what drdo promised is a entirely new computing system, if you see my previous post again, with the new os being one part... so that means a new type of processor and new kind of computer that would envelop the processor and the os running on that processor... promises unkept.

@jamahir why dont you help DRDO

me, a mere college drop-out help the phd geniuses of drdo?? :astagh:

Bengaluru: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar released a list of 70 products and systems that have been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for various wings of armed forces.
Parrikar says that in the last three years, many of these systems developed by DRDO have been inducted into the defence forces.
Interestingly many sub-systems are also being cited by the minister in the Upper House, with some being at various stages of trials, production and induction.
Parrikar says many of the products, originally developed for the defence forces, can also be used by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), state police units and National Disaster Response Force.
DRDO has organised visits of CAPF’s to various laboratories to showcase DRDO’s products and capabilities.
The minister also said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has shortlisted about 146 items for trials, out of which trials of 78 products have already been completed.
He said a large number of products which can provide protection, day-night situational awareness and support-mobility have also been identified for induction into services by MHA after the trials.

Ever since the NDA government came to power in 2014, DRDO has been put on the radar with Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanting youngsters to be given more responsibilities.
This followed the sacking of DRDO head Dr Avinash Chander in 2015 which came as a warning from the top. The post of DRDO DG and Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister was then split into two. Dr S Christopher was given the mandate of running the labs and Dr G Satheesh Reddy was made Parrikar’s advisor.
In the last one year, DRDO seldom made any claims on their achievements and kept many of its missions under wraps.
“DRDO often forgot that they have a user in the waiting with hope. It was a family party often with little focus on R&D. I am not sure if the youngsters got their due. If they (DRDO) have gone silent means, they have been told to prove their worth first. If Make in India needs to succeed DRDO must change their attitude towards private players. The list of 70 items released now would be doubled then,” says a former Indian Air Force official, who worked closely with some of the home-grown projects, while on deputation.
