I always thought that the re-vamp would come with four larger engines instead of the eight double-podded TF-33's.

Like the reliable commercial engines such as PW2000's used on the C17 which the USAF has plenty of experience maintaining and that are/were used on medium sized passenger jets like B757's (military designation C-32 and used by the VP as "Air Force Two").

Two TF-33's in a pod in the B52 "H" variant have a combined thrust of 76+76 = 152 KiloNewtons. The PW2000's have a thrust of 170~190 KN. Which are ideal IMHO.

Eight engines are no cheaper and certainly more to stock parts/maintenance wise.

But transporting smaller engines on cargo jets en masse is probably easier as replacements.

Probably would stress the wings, as they were designed to balance the weight with 8 smaller engines spread over 4 pods.

4 larger engines would mean new wings, and at that point they might as well go with a clean sheet design

sure if you are ignorant of modern air warfare. The B-52 isn't just a Vietnam era carpet bomber anymore. It can strike at stand off range with its massive payload of cruise or hypersonic missiles. It can also drop hundreds of smart stand off munitions , drones, autonomous MALD decoys and EMP missiles from a distance in relative safety.

so yeah laugh all you want but the payload carried by a squadron of B-52's can send a medium sized nation back to the stone age in a single sortie.

So it is a mobile delivery platform albeit a very slow and expensive one.

you do know we built them in the 1960s and have used the platform for 60 years. I'd say that's a remarkable ROI. Does slow matter when you can launch missiles beyond the reach of enemy AD? Expecting another butt hurt ha..ha reaction from the peanut gallery.

This bomber can be considered a strategic weapon, Asymmetrical warfare is different than the wars between countries, Why are people even arguing over who defeat US, where and how ? It does not matter.

I mean that airpower allowed 6000 Marines to defeat everything North Vietnam could throw at it.
At Dien Bien Phu, Giap had almost 6:1 numerical superiority where conventional wisdom says that 3:1 superiority is enough, so You can argue that the Vietnamese believed that Western soldiers were twice as good.

The situation is similar to a guy hiking in a forest that suddenly discovers that ants have infested his breakfast, so he traces them back to an anthill and gives it a royal kick, destroying the anthill. Some ants cling to the leg, and he kills them and leaves.

I would say that the capitulation of the Pakistan forces in East Pakistan is a much worse humiliation and defeat. Half your country rejected You.
There are still many military adventures that rank higher than that on such a list.
